1985. The "Public Hospital", located not too far from the rest of the
Colonial Williamsburg buildings, is at the same time both the most historic
(it was the first) and least historic (with a building actually built
in 1985) of America's historic asylums.
Eastern State Hospital was established in 1773 as the "Public Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds". This original building is now a museum, part of Colonial Williamsburg.
The hospital is still in substantial operation, but has moved to land west of Williamsburg.
