Eastern State Hospital was established in 1773 as the "Public Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds". This original building is now a museum, part of Colonial Williamsburg.
The hospital is still in substantial operation, but has moved to land west of Williamsburg.
Please visit the Eastern State Hospital Website for a substantial look at the history and present operations of this venerable institution.
