HART, John (CT, Signer of Declaration of Independance): Ruth M. Middleton

Hart, John, called a Yankee because he was born in Connecticut, he was a
child when his father, Edward Hart, moved his family to L.I., N.Y., where
Edward as Town Clerk was remitted to goal for having written a
remonstrance against the persecution of the Quakers.

A record exists of the christening of John Hart in the Presbeterian
Church of Hopewell, N.J. Edward Hart was Captain of the militia he
raised of volunteers called "THE JERSEY BLUES" which served in the Battle
of Quebec.

John married Deborah Scudder, of their thirteen children John, born 29
Oct 1748 married Catherine Knowles, their daughter Mary Hart married
Jacob Vandergrift, their daughter Sarah Vandergrift married Jacob
Colbaugh, their daughter Christiana Colbaugh, a twin, married John Thomas
McCurry, their son Samuel Anderson McCurry married Anna Emma Miller,
their daughter Nellie Walton McCurry married James Gillespie Algeo, their
daughter Nellie Elizabeth Algeo was my mother who married my father, Paul
John Leiby.

John Hart was known as "Honest John Hart" He was opposed to the Stamp
Act of 1765, Justice of the Peace, Hunterdon County, N.J. 1755, member of
20th N.J. Assembly 1771, member of 1st Provincial Congress of N.J. 1774,
Judge of New Jersey Court of Common Pleas 1775 - 76, Delegate to
Continental Congress 1776, Vice President of the Continental Congress
1776, member of the Comission of Correspondence, Signer of the
Declaration of Independance, member of 1st Assembly under New
Jersey Constitution, chosen Speaker 1776.

After signing the Declaration of independance John was hunted by the
British like a common criminal through the forests of the Sourland
mountains. He didn't dare sleep two nights in the same place and at one
time shared his sleeping place with a huge dog. His cousin, Penelope
Anderson disguised herself as a beggar, a pauper, an insane old man, to
get through British lines to take John food. His son John had to leave
the territory after the Tories burned and destroyed all the Hart
property, home and lands, devastated cattle, scattered the family. John
had a servant named Jack to whom he had entrusted his dear wife Deborah
and all he had. Once he managed to get to see Deborah who was deathly
ill, he was reading to her out of the Book of Isaiah in the Bible when
Jack came to warn him the British were coming, in their haste to get
Deborah secreted and John escape they turned over the candle burning
through forty pages of the Bible. This Bible was found many years later
in an attic of an old home in Philadelphia.

John died of exposure 11 May 1779 without knowing of the success of the
New Nation.

In 1865 the New Jersey Legislature caused a monument to be erected to the
memory of John Hart and in the dedicatory speech the Governor, Joel
Parker, said, "Upon careful examination of the history of New Jersey
during and immediately preceding the Revolutionary War, I am of the
opinion that John Hart had greater experience in the Colonial and State
Legislation of that day than ony of his contemporaries; and that no man
exercised greater influence in giving direction to the public opinion
which culminated in independance."
