Brief History of Ouachita County
Ouachita County, Arkansas, was created in 1842 from that area which had
formerly been Union County and called Ecore a Fabre Township. Some
records of earlier days can still be found in Union County records. A
two-story frame building was constructed on land donated by Mr. Nunn in
1843-44 and this building served as the County Courthouse until 1857 when it
burned. In 1859 a brick building was constructed upon the same site as the old
one, private log houses being used in the meantime for the holding of court.
The new brick building was the same size as the old one and cost the sum of
about $3,000.00 This brick building burned on the morning of December 19,
1875 with all its contents. Rented places were used for a long time for the
various duties of the officials, but a new Courthouse was constructed and
completed the latter part of 1890 at a cost of about $40,000.00. A tornado in
the 1930's partially demolished the building, but no records were lost.
