THIS ISSUE  OF THE  BACKTRACKER  IS  NOT INDEXED - BECAUSE – of

the  long  lists  in  the  SURNAMES  which  make  up most  of  the book.   We

thought  our readers  would wish  to use special care  in  reading  these  lists.

The Carroll Co. Tax Lists are in an order  which will enable a searcher  to find

a  name  quickly,  but the Crawford  County  Head-of-Household  was  copied

directly from the microfilm and in the order  which they appear on the film. the

same is true of persons living in other households, having a different surname

from the  Head-of-Household.  The handwriting was dim and difficult  at times

to  read.  Care  should  be  taken  to  read  each  name  as  the  spelling  of  a

surname very  often  differs  from the popular use.   For example - “Renfro” is

spelled “Wrenfro” and “Phebos” is probably “Faubus”.
