STEPHEN LAWRENCE CEMETERY

Hot Springs National Park
Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas

According to the March 21, 2010, issue of the Sentinel-Record (Hot Springs, Arkansas), an old forgotten African-American cemetery was found in the north-central part of the Hot Springs National Park. The cemetery contained only one grave marker and that was for Stephen Lawrence, a soldier who served as a private in the Union's 1st Colored Heavy Artillery Unit during the Civil War.

The article further states that officials of the Hot Springs National Park learned of the existence of this cemetery and that of Cedar Mountain after the areas were incorporated into the park The cemeteries are being studied by the National Park Service's Midwest Archeological Center.

Since the article did not list a name for the cemetery, the deceased's name is being shown as the name of the cemetery.
