Newsum, Joyce Reed - Joyce Reed Newsum, 76, of Garland, Texas, formerly of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Hot Springs, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2008, in Dallas, Texas.
She was born November 11, 1932, in North Little Rock, Arkansas, to Henry Louis Reed and Helen Amelia Etzbach Reed. She worked for Southwestern Bell for 25 years and retired as a manager. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Garland, Texas, and formerly a member of Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic Church in Little Rock and The Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist in Hot Springs. She graduated from Hot Springs High School in Hot Springs in 1950 and attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville her junior year. She was crowned Miss Arkansas in 1953, she was Ambassador-Arkansas Traveler, Miss Fayetteville, Arkansas, in 1953, Dream Girl in 1954 of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity in Fayetteville. Her hobbies were playing Bridge, tap dancing, and dance teacher.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Louis Reed and Helen Amelia Reed, and her daughter, Helen Diane Reed.
Funeral Mass will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 2008, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Fort Smith, Arkansas, with Father Tom Elliott officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith.
She is survived by two sons, Jack Newsum and wife Darcey, of Dallas, Texas, Darren Newsum and wife Julie, of McAlester, Oklahoma; and five grandchildren, Dustin P. Newsum of McAlester, M. Jake Newsum of Fayetteville, Madison Newsum of McAlester, Morgan Newsum of McAlester, and Jackson K. Newsum of Dallas.
Pallbearers will be Jack, Darren, Dusty, and Jake Newsum.
