Paul Harris

PRESCOTT--Paul T. Harris, 76, of Prescott, died Sunday, January 9, 2005, at his home. He was born March 15, 1928, in Blevins, to Monte and Grace McDougald Harris. He was a retired building contractor and rancher. He was a member of the Prescott Church of Christ, a Mason, a Shriner and a former member of Nevada Co. Cattleman's Association. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Essie Faye Richey Harris, who died in 1998; by his daughter, Donna Lynn Harris, and by four brothers, Monty, Hayden, Chubby, and Ralph.

Survivors include his wife, Earleen Mathis Harris, of Prescott; one son, Michael Richie Harris and Carol, of Ft. Worth, Texas; one stepson, Mike Ridling, of Rowlett, Texas; one stepdaughter, Susan Swallow, of Rowlett, Texas; two brothers, John K. Harris, Geneva, Texas and Joe Harris, of Prescott; three sisters, Elizabeth Wilson Tinsley, of Prescott, Martha Sisson, of Hope, and Esther Wilson, of Tyler, Texas; two grandchildren, Haley Baker Carter, of Waxahachie, Texas, and Michael Heath Harris, of Fort Worth, Texas; one step grandson, Craig Swallow and Karen, of Rowlett, Texas and four great grandchildren, Bailee R. Carter, Brody Carter, Katelyn Harris, and Kooper Harris.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 12 at the Church of Christ, in Prescott with Mr. Gene Cloer and Mr. Tony Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in DeAnn Cemetery in Prescott. Arrangements are by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 11, from 6-8 p.m. at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.

I was born on September 1, 1961, in the Cora Donnell Hospital in Prescott, AR, the youngest of three children born to my parents, James Russell "Chubby" Harris and Jamie Earlene Lucas.� My mother never liked her middle name.� My father, because he was so skinny as a boy, was humorously nicknamed "Chubby" by his Grandad McDougald, and the name stuck with him all of his life.� I was blessed with wonderful parents who raised me in a Christian home.� I owe my life to them.

�� My earliest recollection as a boy is watching the news report on television of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.� I remember mother pointing out "John-John" to me during the funeral procession. More pleasant to my memory was the church nursery attendant (I believe her name was Sister Hardesty) at the First Assembly of God in Bossier City, LA.� I can still see her as a tall slender lady seated in a large rocking chair.

�� The pastor of the church, Rev. Mildred Greene, occupies a special place in my heart, for I remember how kind she was to me.� She would hold me in her arms when I was only two years old and encourage me to imitate how she praised the Lord, by getting me to lift my hands, and shout, "OOO...AHH...GLORY!"� This was done to her sheer delight and the amusement of those standing around.� Sister Greene would often hug and kiss me while saying, "God love it."� She was a lady bigger than life and had a definite influence on my later calling in life.

�� I can also remember as a two-year-old, Jim and Rosemary Barron, who were dear friends of our family.� Jim enjoyed taking me out of my father's arms and would laugh when I would object and begin to fidget and lunge back for Daddy while whining, "Gimme to him!"� I loved my Daddy then, and I love him now.

�� I can remember waiting for Daddy to come home from work, and when I would hear his truck drive up in the driveway, I would run outside and take off running towards him, then he would sweep me up in his arms, hug and kiss me, then carry me into the house.� After supper, he usually asked me to go and get his briefcase out of the truck and bring it to him.� I never understood until now why he never brought that briefcase in himself when he came in from work--he wanted his hands free so he could pick me up and carry me.� I can remember being so tired at the end of a long church service and playing like I was asleep so that Daddy would carry me.

�� One of my fondest memories of childhood was when my father would be lying in bed and would stretch out his arm between the pillows, pat his right tricep with his left hand and say, "Andy, come lay on Daddy's muscle."� Of course, I always enjoyed this because it was then that he would tell me one of the two stories I always wanted to hear.� Both stories shared the same setting--a rodeo; and the main character of both stories was a mean and vicious bull--one was named "Booger Red" and the other "Dangerous Dan."

�� I remember him telling me that a young girl was performing a barrel ride when Dangerous Dan used his massive strength to burst through a fence and began charging towards the girl and the horse she was riding. Then, as the audience watched in terror, all of the cowboys in the arena, as one man, raced to the girl's rescue, but not in time to keep Dangerous Dan from sinking one of his long horns into the side of the unfortunate horse.� The girl was saved, but I don't remember if the horse survived or not.� Dangerous Dan, however, was taken out back and shot to death.

�� All I remember about Booger Red was that when a cowboy drew his lot for the bull riding event, it was time to say his prayers!� When Booger Red was about to come out of the pen, the announcer would warn the audience to back up from the fence and to not lean over the rail, for this was a deadly, wild animal.� One evening, after Booger Red had bucked the unlucky cowboy off his back and tossed him like a rag doll, one of the rodeo clowns attempted to divert the bull's attention in hopes of saving the cowboy's life and keeping him from being trampled underfoot. It was then that Booger Red turned from the cowboy and began venting his fury on the clown, hooking the man in the side with his horns and throwing him over his head.� As the clown landed face down on the ground with a death-like thud, Booger Red then turned quickly and proceeded to stomp the poor man with his hooves.� Women were screaming, children were crying, and the whole arena was in a panic.� By that time, the other cowboys and clowns were forming a human shield between the wounded man and Booger Red while forcing the bull back into the pen.� The clown had been critically injured and was rushed from the scene by ambulance to the hospital, and, you guessed it, both stories ended the same, Booger Red was shot to death, too!� Daddy told me they made hamburger meat out of both of them!

�� It didn't matter how many times I heard those stories as a young boy, I never tired of hearing them.� Those were special times--just for Daddy and me.� I wish I could hear him tell me those stories again.

�� My father worked hard in construction all of my childhood.� He made millions for the men he worked for through the years.� I believe Don Coleman, Vern Hawn, and Beal Locke would tell you that they owe a great deal of their success in the building business to Chubby Harris for his expertise as a general superintendent on the construction site.� Daddy knew how to get people to work together.� He also knew how to get the job done and done well.

�� It wasn't until I was in high school and after he had suffered two major heart attacks and heart surgery involving five-bypasses (one of the first performed in Shreveport) that Daddy finally listened to mother and started his own building business.� I remember feeling the uncertainty with which they made this step of faith, but the Lord prospered them significantly.� My brother, Jimmy, and sister, Jana, joined my mother in making Chubby Harris Builders, Inc., a very successful enterprise.� I helped out in the business until I went off to Bible College, and my participation since then has mainly been that of prayer and counsel.� But Daddy has treated me just as good as the others, feeling honored that the Lord would lay His hand on one of his children and place him in the ministry; and knowing that were it not for that calling, I would be working at his side, too.

�� Other childhood memories include the day my mother took me shopping with her to Swint's Grocery about a mile from our home.� While riding in the shopping cart, I saw a Donald Duck sippy cup that I wanted and reached out to get it.� Mother proceeded to explain to me that since that cup was pink, she wouldn't buy it for me, but picked up a blue Mickey Mouse cup instead and put it in the buggy.� When we got home, I apparently couldn't get that cup out of my mind, for I got the Donald Duck cup, and, while wearing only a diaper, walked barefooted all the way back to the store.� It wasn't long before mother missed me around the house, and, in a panic, began searching frantically for me throughout the neighborhood.� As a last resort, she got in the car and dashed back to Swint's grocery, where she immediately saw a drainage ditch full of water near the parking lot.� Her heart stopped, thinking that I might be at the bottom of that ditch, drowned.� So she ran into the store and up to the manager's desk and asked if he had seen her little lost boy.� The manager replied, "Well, ma'am, there's a little boy back there, but he doesn't appear to be lost--he's having a lot of fun making havoc out of the pinto beans!"

�� I wandered off another time, while still in diapers, and was found playing in the median of Airline Drive in the middle of rush hour traffic by a kind lady who picked me up and drove her car slowly through our neighborhood until she found a frantic lady, my mother, once again, looking for her little lost Andy.� It was not that my mother didn't keep a good eye on me, it was just that I was adventuresome, I guess you could call it!� Surely, the angels worked overtime looking after me!
