John A. Cameron, who shot and killed David Yarborough, a few days since, mention of which was made in The Gazette a few days since, had a preliminary trial yesterday and was acquitted.

Ellen M. Owens Funeral services for Mrs. Ellen M. Owens, aged 74, wife of the late C.W. Owens, died suddenly last Sunday afternoon at four o'clock at the home of her son, H.L. Sullivan at the Monticello hotel, were held at the Stephenson Funeral Home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Elder Alex Clark of the Pauline Baptist church. Burial was in Gaster Hill cemetery. Born in Bradley county December 1st, 1869, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Cherry, she came to near Cornersville, Lincoln county when a child. At the age of six, she had the misfortune to lose her eye sight being totally blind for six years, but after a treatment her eyesight was restored and at her advanced age she could easily read without glasses.  When eighteen years of age she was married to the late J.H. Sullivan and from this union five children were born, one of whom H.L. Sullivan of Monticello survives. Mrs. Owens was held in high esteem by a host of friends in Lincoln and Drew counties for her Christian character and her devotion to her family.  Her many friends often spoke of her as being so loyal and so deeply interested in her home. Beside the son and daughter above she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. F.S. Tucker, Cornersville and Mrs. Maud Ricks of Portland, two brothers, W.H. Cherry of Monticello and J.H. Cherry of Cornersville. Also surviving are two great grandchildren and seventeen grandchildren.

Dec. 21, 1944

Thomas N. Scifres, 76 year old planter at Relfs Bluff, died last Thursday. He was born in Indianapolis, Ind., and had lived in Relfs Bluff some 53 years. He was a member of the Methodist Church, of the Woodmen of the World and the Odd Fellows. He was prominent in the affairs of his county and his community. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Syvilla Johnson, to whom he had been married 53 years; four daughters, Mrs. Winnie Haisty, Pine Bluff; Mrs. W.N. Beaulieu, Alexandria; Mrs. O.A. Boyd, Dyess; Miss Gwendolyn Scifres, San Diego, Cal., six sons, Thomas Wesley, McGehee, L.V., Monticello, Odell, McAllister, Okla., Lee, Pickens, Coy, Little Rock and Cullin Scifres of Osceola. Funeral services were held at the Holly Springs Church conducted by the Rev. R.H. Sorrells of Dumas and the Rev. Charles Wall of Little Rock.  Burial was in the Holly Springs Cemetery.

Mar. 29, 1945

Edward Lane Gardner, four-month old son of Dr. and Mrs. Buford Gardner of Star City, was killed and Mrs. John Gardner of Monticello, grandmother of the baby, received serious head injuries in a wreck which occurred at Tarry, between Star City and Pine Bluff, on Tuesday. Details of the accident were not available at press time. Other occupants in the car besides the infant and its grandmother, were Mrs. Buford Gardner, Karen, Milton and Johnny Gardner, children of Dr. and Mrs. Gardner. Mrs. Buford Gardner suffered severe shock and bruises and she and her baby son were removed to St. Vincents Infirmary in Little Rock where the baby died Wednesday morning. The other three children were uninjured. Mrs. John Gardner was taken to Davis Hospital in Pine Bluff where the extent of her injuries is as yet undetermined. Funeral announcement for the baby had not been announced here Wednesday afternoon. The survivors include his parents, two brothers and one sister, all of Star City, his paternal grandmother of Monticello, his maternal grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Kersh of Rt. 3 Monticello.
