Subject: Conatser Family

Greetings,

My husband is descended from the Conatser Family. We have a puzzle that we hope you can help us.

Joseph/James Henry Conatser (1797-1878) had a son named William (Bill) P. Conatser (1826-1862).  William (Bill) P. Conatser had four sons:  William H. Conatser, Benjamin Franklin Conatser, Daniel/Andrew Conatser, and John/James Alexander Conatser.

My husband is descended from Benjamin Franklin Conatser.  We have two pictures of someone named Asberry and Hettie Conatser...on the back of one of the pictures it reads:  Asberry Conatser...brother of Benjamin Franklin Conatser.  We located Asberry and Hettie Conatser in the 1900 and the 1910 census records of Pike County, Arkansas.

Can you help us locate information about any of the above families?

Thank you kindly.
God bless America.
Susie

You might check in Johnson County for the marriage.  The Honea's lived in
the far eastern part of the county and for some reason, many people from
this section of the county when to Johnson County to marry.

Some of my Blanscet relatives married into the Honea family.

Well Jane Martin just told me you are the one who knows most about the Iveys of Franklin County.  Thank you for your reply.

A Crawford County researcher sent me some info on my great grandfather Abraham Corder.  She became interested in the court case when she stumbled onto Moses Ford's tombstone in Crawford County.

The court case seems to be the result of a post Civil War feud between the Loyalists and the Democrats during Reconstruction.  My great-great grandparents were living at Pleasant View PO in Mulberry Twp. in 1860.  I am assuming they were probably in the same location in 1850 when they are shown to be in Middle Township.  Abe Corder's sister married Ed Hassett whose family seems to have been located in Franklin County, AR.

The newspaper articles came from the Van Buren Press, May 3 1870; pg 3 Col.3 and May 10 1870 pg 3
There was also a letter written May 6 1870 from Mulberry Mills [any idea where that was?]  Then there were other articles from a different perspective.  One started out -  1870 September 6 Ozark, Ark.  It is a letter to the editor giving an opinion of this court case.

The Players were -
Moses (Moody) Ford, living near Frazier's Gin [Any idea where this is] was found dead 10 miles from his home.  He had been shot.  Fricke, Moss and B. Simpson had been hunting when Ford was killed.
Henry A Fricke was shot by a posse who blamed him for Ford's death, while mistaking him for Ed Hassett..
J. R Meadows, Justice of the Peace for Lafayette Twp., Crawford County, issued the warrant for Fricke.  The posse members were -
Ed Hassett (Fricke's known enemy) , Bake Meadows, John F Meadows,  Abe Corder, Jake Rogers, Marion Roads, Ran Rowls, John Gaston and several others.  Meadors, Hasset and other posse members were arrested by Sheriff Anderson. Squire Ivey of Franklin Co. issued the writ.  Prosecuters were Col. S. Noone, & Capt. S L Wittich.  The case was transferred from James Ivey's court to Hon. J S Sutherland, County Court Judge for Franklin County.  J. P. Wm F Hoyle and Col. H R Withers defended.  Evidence had been heard before Sutherland and Hoyle.   The case was brought before G S Ciden and Wm F Hoyle.  Then the case was changed to the venue of Ivey's Twp.  Ivey discharged the posse for lack of evidence.  H R Withers & N W Patterson apllied for a new trial.  It was a no show.

Reuben Corder bought land in Lafayette Twp. in 1874 and Abe paid  real estate taxes for land near Reuben's in 1890.  The family moved to Lafayette Twp. in Crawford County by 1870.  Ed Hassett bought a hotel in Alma by 1881.

I am searching for the family of William M. Brown who married Mary E. Wilson around 1911/12. Mary's parents were Zack and Fannie Wilson. Fannie was Fannie Catherine Morris.
I think possibly that a James Brown, born Feb., 1842 might have been the father to William M. Brown, as he had a son W. M. born 1878 around the same time as William M Brown. Can anyone help me?

David and Parthenia Gautier lived in Middle, Franklin, Franklin Co., Arkansas in the 1870s and 1880s according to the census from those years.  They had moved to Arkansas from Texas at some point in the later part of the Civil War or shortly thereafter.

They had a daughter, Amanda, who married Austin Thomas before 1870. We know of one child, Robert.

We are looking for any records of their existence, marriage, death and burial location and would so appreciate any help or leads you can give.

Looking for information on William W. Taylor, b. abt. 1825 in Ohio or Tenn, or Thomas F. Taylor, b. abt. 1827. They are in Pope County, Arkansas around Dover in the 1860 and 1870 census. In the 1880 census Thomas is in Franklin County, Arkansas and Williams wife Mary are living next to each other along with another William Taylor,John Taylor, Mathew Taylor and Houston Taylor. I was wondering if anyone knows of any connection to all of these Taylors.

Don:
You are a true FAMILY HISTORIAN (GENEALOGIST).  You really get it! Those
direct line ancestors and their progeny were & are REAL people w/ many facinating
details in their lives.  That is what we should be striving to find in our
research.  Not just names, dates & places.
Those of us who are persistent and subscribe to surname lists and locality
lists (e.g., Franklin County) are fortunate to find some of those cousins on line.
There are some descendants of my great grandfather's brother, John Anderson Morse,
with whom I would like to connect.  John's first wife was Caroline Rice, b. 1827
in Tn, d. 1880.  I would dearly love to hear from one of their descendants.  1870
census and 1880 land records show them in Franklin county.  I cannot find them or
my great-grandfather Henry Morse in the 1880 census.  Yet I know they were there.
Frustrating! Would also like to find the cemetery in which Caroline Rice Morse is
buried.  Jeanne Morse, Sacramento

It is sobering to contemplate the numbers of cousins we collected in just
the past four generations.

In the past four generations each of us had eight sets of grandparents one
to four times removed.

Each generation in the Kelly line, and I suspect other lines as well, 4th
gparents produced ten children, 3rd generation nine children, 2nd generation
seventeen children, and each of those generations of children all added
together produced in total perhaps as many as ten thousand cousins.

Yet each of us are very lucky if we actually knew twenty cousins.

Worst yet, many of us have yet to discover the given names of of our eight
sets of  fore-parents

We have a lot of work to do.

Don Kelly, Pruitt, Beebe Williamson, McGee, Richardson, Owen, Rutledge
Massey, et. al. plus those I have not yet found.

I love them all.

Daniel,
So glad to have contact with another cousin.  I have heard of Garland Conatser my whole life.  My parents and my dads cousins have mentioned them while I was growing up.  Yes,  my Great Grandma Ellen Conatser married John A. Gray and John was the brother of Mary Belle.  My Grandma was Sarah Ethel Gray McLaren, John and Ellen's daughter.  My cousin and I get together once in awhile and look over family tree info and I tell her anything new I have found, and I borrow photos from her periodically to make copies of. She is 84 years old so she has a lot of old photos and info to share with me.  The only other relative I have been able to get in touch with is Rob Conatser who is also a ggrandson of Christopher Conatser.  He is Earnest Conatser's grandson.
Thank you so much for replying to my post, I am always so happy to hear from other relatives.

SURNAME: POINTER

I research the Pointer/Poynter families in the US.  The 1860 Census in White Oak Twp pgs 50/51 or 291 #358/346 shows a Mary Pointer 47 Farmer b. MO.  Her children included: Nancy J. 21, F.M. 18, (both born IL), Philander 15 & Teander (Leander?) 15 both born in MO, and Amasa 12 (Male) b. AR.  I have been unable to locate them on the 1850 Census.  Can anyone tell me who the father/husband of this family might have been?  Thanks for your help

SURNAME: ELLIOTT

My great great grandfather, Thomas Whitman Elliott, b. 15 Apr 1808 in Hardin Co. Kentucky and moved to Franklin County, Arkansas in the middle 1840's. He died 21 Aug 1852 after a horse smashed him against a barn door. He was buried, "in Hales Burying ground about three miles down on the south side of the Arkansas River from the county seat of Franklin County, Arkansas." I'm attempting to locate "Hales burying ground," and it is not listed as a cemetery in Franklin County. I have read that there was an earlier pioneer by the name of William Hail (or Hale) and William Cureton that own property in that same location. I've read that a David Walker and Archibald Yell bought land from Hail (Hale) and the land was developed starting in 1838 and the town of Charles Town (now Charleston) began.
My question for anyone that has done early pioneer history research is; "Hales burying ground" does it still exist and if so how do I find it, and is William Hail (Hale) have anything to do with this "burying" ground?

I have been researching the Cook family for several years, so I have a vested interest in this project.  My mother (Olive Eudora Cook) was born in Ozark, Franklin County, Arkansas in 1904.  I have not been able to locate any information for my branch of the Cook family. Her parents: John Lemule Cook, Josie Eudora Claunch-Cook, and John Lemule's father Benjamin Franklin Cook who married Martha Jane Vaughn.  There may be information about them in the documents still waiting for transcription.  I am sure others are hopeful for information about their ancestors too!
