Hickory Grove Cemetery (1978)

Mountain Top, Arkansas

This cemetery is located approximately 10 miles North of Ozark, Arkansas just off State Highway 219. No one seems to know just when the first grave was made there. There are four rock covered graves in the cemetery which were there when Mrs. Kate Hill Johnson Moved there as a child. She is now 99 years old, and spent over 89 years in sight of the cemetery.

The story is that during the Civil War men were killed by soldiers and "Bushwhackers", and the women had to bury them, not being able to dig deep graves, they did the best they could, then covered with rocks.

Hickory Grove School which has been restored and is now used as a community building, is beside the cemetery. The land for the school ws given by Mrs. Elizabeth Bateman Laney, 2 April 1889. Mrs. Laney was the grandmother of Mrs. Earl Laster (nee Jeanie Warnock); and great Aunt of Mrs. Sebern J. Davis (nee Mary Bateman).

Some 20 years ago Mrs. Kate Johnson Hill, Mrs. Lois Davis Nichols and the late Fred Snow, walked over the cemetery and listed the names of the people that they knew were buried there, even though some of the graves did not have stones. All three of them lived in the neighborhood all their lives, and attended most all the burials that were in their time, and knew the stories of the people.

The dates of the stones were later added by Thelma Davis Smee and made into a tablet, which she has added to over the years.

The cemetery contains 57 other graves, unknown and unmarked.

Thank you Carolyn. I will add this information. What cemetery in Mulberry should I add it to? So nice for descendents to honor their ancestors by putting up a stone. Seems less lonely that way.   Don

Hello, I am the wife of James Ivey, formerly of Mulberry, Arkansas.  We have some information on the graves of Malinda Tyson and the two graves beside her.    1.  They now have headstones.   2.  Malinda A. (Smith) Tyson was the wife of William Josiah Tyson.  They were married in Franklin County, Arkansas on 15 Nov 1882.  He was 32 and she was 21.  They were married by O. B. Donaldson, JP.  They had two sons  Robert Onslow Tyson and Charles Tyson.   3.  There are two babies graves there.  One on either side of her.  These are the infant sons of Robert Onslow Tyson and Almeda Jane Maxwell.  They were married in Franklin County, Arkansas on 28 Jul 1912 by J. B. Hale, JP.  He was 27 and she was 22.   4.  One son is Robert Joel Tyson, born and died on 22 Feb 1922.   5.  The other is Junior Maxwell Tyson, born and died on 30 Dec, 1928.   These two babies were the brothers of my Mother-in-law, Vessie Oena "Tyson" Ivey.  She remembers holding them when they were born.    Please update this info on the web site.  This site contains some great info for genealogists.  Thank you for maintaining it.   Diggin Up Bones 2 Carolyn "Holloway" Ivey Altus, Arkansas 479-468-0380
