Blanscet Cemetery, Franklin County, Arkansas

Located north of Altus, Franklin County, Arkansas on hwy 186, about 1 mile north of
Saint Marys Catholic Church and ½ mile west of the highway. (on a dirt road go to
the end of road turn right and follow lane to cemetery) There is a metal archway with
"BLANSCET" over the entrance way. This area is called "Pond Creek Mountain", and is
in the heart of grape country. Altus is well known for the grapes that are grown in
this area.
The cemetery is run on donations taken up during Decoration Day. This last year a new
fence was put up around the cemetery. At the present time there is no sign at the highway
where you turn off at, but we hope to be able to put one up this year. The cemetery has
a full time person to take care of it. It is mowed four or more times a year.Blanscet Cemetery is on property that Andrew Jackson Blanscet gave to his son Thomas
Jefferson Blanscet. The cemetery was founded 16 Oct 1882 when Thomas Jefferson and
Tennessee Jane (Beeson) Blanscet son died. Tom left 1 ¼ acre for the family cemetery.
There is a county maintained road to the cemetery, which is provided by Franklin County.
Hiram Beeson "Beese" Blanscet, as the only surviving child of the Tom Blanscet family,
filed the deed to the land on which the Blanscet Cemetery sits on Pond Creek Mountain,
saying that the land was left for cemetery use by Thomas Jefferson and Tennessee Jane
(Beeson) Blanscet, on October 17th, 1978.
Decoration is the 3rd Sunday of May every year and potluck lunch is served also.
Also a family reunion is also held on the same date. All family and friends are welcomed.Note: To the right of the cemetery are six graves with rock markers. It is told by my aunt Lillian Blanscet that the "Box" family" is buried there. That is all that we know about them.
