Black Oak Cemetery

Here are pictures of all of the headstones at the Washington Co Arkansas, Black Oak Cemetery.

It is in ruins & probably won't be around much longer. This isn't to be confused with the

Black Oak Cemetery that is to the West of this one. Black Oak Cemetery is on County Road 243

on the west side of Greenland. It is a 3-acre hilltop cemetery containing some 300 graves

from about 1843 to the mid-1930's.

Black Oak Cemetery at Greenland has been named to the National Register of Historic Places,

according to a news release from the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program.

The register is the country's official list of historically significant properties.

The nomination of the cemetery said it is significant as "…an important reminder of pioneer

life in Washington County and a link for families still residing in the county….The cemetery

contains the graves of John Alexander, first territorial representative of the county of Washington,

descendants of several early area families and the foundation of the Black Oak school…The

Black Oak Cemetery is a testament to the varied lives of Washington County community members…

Their roles as merchants, soldiers, statesmen and homesteaders in early Arkansas can be remembered

within the grounds of Black Oak Cemetery."
