This
cemetery is the largest in SEBASTIAN COUNTY, with over 4,000 burials. It is
located within the city limits of Fort Smith, Arkansas. 1000 South
Greenwood Av. , Fort Smith, Arkansas. It can be reached by going East on
Rogers Ave. (through a main street) and Rogers Av. intersects with South
Greenwood Av. Turn right and go 3-1/2 blocks and the cemetery is on the
left. It actually is close to the old Historic downtown area, about
2 miles. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in Fort Smith. There are many
famous and infamous persons buried here – from Judge Isaac Parker to many of
the criminals that were hung on the gallows during Judge Parker’s reign in the
mid and late 1800’s. The cemetery is surrounded with a black wrought iron
fence, which is presently being restored. A large, brick open “tent”
for the graveside burial has been added in the last 3 years.
