While out and about on the back
forest roads of Scott County, I
ran across Freedom Creek Cemetery.
Noting how beautifully kept it was and its
location out in the middle of
nowhere, I took pictures.
On Forest service road about 6 miles
off of Hiway 248 east of Waldron is
Freedom Creek Cemetery. It is
enclosed with a white fence and has only
sixteen grave sites, three have
marked stones and they read as follows:
Mary E. Horton Dec. 11, 1831 - May 15, 1914
Savannah Yandell 1869-1913
(Mother)
Myrtle Starr Daughter of J.S. & Mary Starr Feb 17,1904 - May 17, 1908
*note for Myrtle there are two
stones for her the original is by the tree
and then a new one has been placed
beside it.
There are 13 umarked grave sites
with stones. I have no idea who they are but
from the looks of it, they are
mostly kids. Talking to people from the area of Cardiff and Freedom Mountain,
in 1904 -1908
a plague went through the area and
killed a lot of people. Kids were the ones that were hit hard.
This was one of the reasons the
people of Cardiff and Freedom Creek Communities started to move away.
