NEW HOPE CEMETERY

Bodcaw Township, Hempstead County, Arkansas

New Hope Cemetery is located nine miles south of Hope, Arkansas on the Patmos Road, behind the New Hope Primitive

Baptist Church, which is no longer being used.

On September 6, 1889 two acres of land in the NE of SE of Section Eleven, Township Fourteen of Range 24 West was

Purchased from S. E. Burns by the officers of the Primitive Baptist Church at New Hope. They were J. A. Burns, J. M.

Thompson and W. A. Curtis. (Hempstead Co. records Bk 23-P 199) (William S. Curtis was the son of Tapley Curtis.)

The late Pat Ratliff, who would have been 93 on July 6, 1989 grew up on a farm adjoining the cemetery. He said the

church building was constructed in 1872 and its centennial observed in 1972. He said in the early 1920’s the association

met at the church with 15 to 20 preachers and everyone traveling in buggies and wagons. The automobile changed things,

but until a few years ago, people came from Hot Springs and East Texas the first Sunday in the month as this was the only

Primitive Baptist Church in the area.

The earliest burial that is marked with a stone is that of Thomas L. Mauldin who died in 1871. Thus the cemetery apparently

was begun about the time the church was built.
