Austin Larimore Porterfield was born
October 16, 1896, in Salem, Strawberry Township, Fulton County, Arkansas, and
died August 25, 1979, in Victoria, Texas.
The following obituary is from the “Star,” August 27, 1979:
Graveside services for Austin L. Porterfield, 83, professor
emeritus of TCU, will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Laurel Land Cemetery.
Funeral services for Porterfield, living in Victoria for the
past two years, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in
Victoria. He died Saturday in a Victoria hospital.
Porterfield became a TCU professor in 1937. He was chairman
of the sociology department until he retired in 1966. He was well known for articles
and journals he wrote on sociology and related topics. He was a member of the
University Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Irene Cox Porterfield of Victoria;
daughters, Francis Willis, of Gilmer and Rosella Chastant of Grosett Park,
Ark., nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made in
the form of contributions to the TCU Sociology Scholarship Fund.
