TOM CARTER - December 8, 1944
Young Salem Sailor
Killed In Action
Mr. and Mrs. Bart
Carter, of near Salem, received a telegram from the War Department Sunday,
announcing that their son, Seaman I-2 Otto Tom Carter, 18, had been killed in
action. The telegram gave no particulars as to where or on what date he was
killed.
The young sailor was the
youngest son of Mr. & Mrs. Carter. He enlisted in the Navy in November
1942, and received his basic training at Great Lakes,__. Shortly thereafter he
was assigned to ship duty. Two of Seaman Carter's brothers are also in service.
Cpl. James Carter, of the Army Air Force, now stationed in France, and Sgt.
William H. Carter, of the Army Air Transport Service, stationed in the Aleutian
Islands.
Besides his parents,
Otto is survived by several brothers and sisters.

CARTER
William Bart Carter was
born at Starkie, Ark., January 16, 1891, and died at his home near Salem, May
31, 1955, at the age of 64 years, 4 months, and 15 days.
He was united in
marriage to Mary Wainwright near Salem November 8, 1910, and to this union 15
children were born. Three of his children preceded him in death.
Survivors include his
wife of Salem, four sons: Clay..Truman..Jim Lee, and William H. Eight
daughters: Margie..Mildred..Mrs. Deason..Ruth Ann..Maxine..Dixie..Della, and
Juanita. Three brothers: Ray..John..Virgil. One sister, Elizabeth..25 grandchildren
and a host of other relatives and many friends.
Services were held in
the Salem Assembly of God church at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 3, with Rev. Love
officiating. Interment was in the Salem Cemetery, under the direction of Carter
Funeral Service.
