Johnson
Brown Cemetery
is located in the Barney community in northeastern Faulkner County. From Conway, go east on Hwy 64, turn left
onto Hwy 36; take Hwy 107 through Enola and Barney (watch for Brown Cemetery
sign). The cemetery is on the right
side of Hwy 107 at the end of a dirt road that leads through a pasture.
There are many old
monuments in this cemetery, including the graves of John Powell, born in 1788,
his wife (1800) and his family. Several
of the monuments have been damaged by storms and are becoming illegible. As with many old cemeteries, there are
numerous graves marked by rocks.
A census taken by the
Faulkner County Historical Society in 1979 yielded 203 graves. I surveyed this cemetery on March 2, March 5
with Veradean McCord, my mother, and I returned on March 6, 2003. At that time, there were 351 individual
grave sites.
