Generation D
RICHARD ATWEEKE/WICKES was born about 1545 in Staines Parish, Middlesex, England. He married Florence Bicknell about 1569 in Staines. Richard died about 1592 in Staines. Florence died about 1590 in Staines.
- Children of this marriage are:
- Robert ATWEEKE/WICKES
- working on siblings
Generation C
ROBERT WICKES was born about 1581 in Staines Parish, Middlesex, England. He married Sarah Enderley about 1605 in Staines. Robert died Sep 1638 in Staines. Sarah was born about 1585 in Stanes and died before 1670 in Staines.
- Children of this marriage are:
- William WICKES/WEEKS
- John
- Robert
- Thomas
Generation B
WILLIAM WICKES/WEEKS was born about 1615 or 1620 in Staines Parish, Middlesex, England. He married about 1645 but the given name of his wife is not known for sure. The only document on Martha's Vineyard that refers to her only gives her name as "GOODWIFE WEEKS" Some researchers list her name as Elizabeth Unknown and others as Elizabeth Atherton. These names are wrong and actually a mixup with a different Weeks Family in Dorchester, MA. Goodwife died about 1658. William married again to Mrs. Mary (Lynde) Butler widow of John Butler. She had five children with John Butler but no known children with William. Mary was born in 1628 and was still alive in 1693. William died in Edgartown sometime between 29 Dec 1688 and Aug 1689.
- Children of the first marriage are:
- William
- Elizabeth
- Samuel
- Richard
- John
- Abigail
Generation A
SAMUEL WEEKS was born about 1651 in Falmouth, Barnstable, MA. He married Abigail WESTON about 1672. He came to Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard with his father about 1653. He was in Edgartown in 1681. In 1688 he sold his land and moved off island to an unknown place.
- Believed child of this marriage is:
- Joshua
- I believe the father of Joshua Weeks is Samuel Weeks the son of William Weeks of Falmouth, Barnstable, MA and Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard for the following "circumstantial evidence" reasons:
1. When a relative of mine bought the three volumes of Charles Edward Banks' book "The History of Martha's Vineyard..." from the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society there was a handwritten margin note after the name of Joshua Weeks which says his father is Samuel Weeks the son of William Weeks.
2. During this time period there were two distinct Weeks Families in the geographic area. There were William Weeks and the John Weeks Families. William and John are believed to be brothers and sons of Robert Weeks of Middlesex, England. William's family seems to have more connection to Martha's Vineyard than John's family.
3. William Weeks Sr., had four sons, William Jr., Samuel, Richard, and John. Except for Samuel all the others have had their families researched rather thoroughly. Their wives and children seem to be known. However, Samuel does not seem to have been research as much and much information about his family is still unknown, especially where he went after selling his land on the island in 1688. Therefore, I believe Samuel is the most likely to possibly have had a son by the name of Joshua Weeks.
4. There is no mention of Samuel or Joshua in the book "Early History of Naushon Island" by Amelia Forbes Emerson. William Weeks Senior, his sons William Junior and John, and John's sons Shubael and Ebenezer are mentioned.
5. Joshua had a son named Samuel. Naming conventions of the time suggest Joshua may have named his son after his father.
6. Samuel is documented as living in Edgertown in 1681 when Joshua would have been about 6 years old. I have been told by a Weeks researcher that Samuel left Martha's Vineyard about 1688 possibly for Rhode Island, the Massachusetts main-land or Connecticut when Joshua would have been about 13 years old. Perhaps when Joshua became of age he moved back to Martha's Vineyard because of previously have lived in Edgartown. Being gone from the island from about 1688 until 1710 may account for the lack of documentation about his parents. Further research is needed to determine where Samuel went after he sold his land on Martha's Vineyard in 1688. Also, what happened to Joshua and Abigail after 1741. Further research needs to be done in the geographical areas of Nantucket, Hopkinton, Rhode Island and maybe Connecticut.

Generation Number 5
*JAMES WEEKS II was born about 1790. He lived in Nantucket and Dukes Counties and his
occupation was farmer. He married his first wife was Sophronia Fisher on 25 Feb 1810 in Nantucket, MA; He married his second wife Mrs Hannah (Macy) Swain, who was born 11 Jun 1801 in Nantucket on 5 Jun 1834.
The first husband of Hannah was Gideon Swain, a sailor who was lost at sea. Gideon and Hannah had one son Henry M. Swain. Hannah was the daughter of Samuel Macy and Lydia Folger. Hannah was a first cousin four generations removed to the American Statesman Benjamin Franklin. Their son, William who was the architect of the Mormon Nauvoo Temple was born April 11, 1813. The family migrated to the Midwest, by coming down the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes and landed at Chicago in 1835. They settled in Elwood Township, Vermilion County, Illinois. Historical note here. At the time the family was living in Vermilion County Abraham Lincoln was practicing law in Danville the county seat of Vermilion County only a few miles away from Elwood township.
In 1848 the family moved to Greenbush Township, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin where James purchased and cleared 160 acres of land. Sometime after James II died Hannah sold the farm to James III and returned to Illinois. My great-uncle William Almon Weeks told me he was told by his grandfather James Weeks III that the family remaining in Wisconsin was happy to see Hannah and her two daughters leave because they were so strict in practicing their Quaker beliefs.
James II died 10 Jun 1855 in the Town of Greenbush, Sheboygan County. No record of his burial location can be found in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. A personal search by family members of the Greenbush Cemetery where his daughter Matilda, who died around the ages of 5 to 10, and his son James III is buried was unsuccessful in locating his burial place. It is possible his grave is unmarked because of the Quaker beliefs of the time about not marking graves. If anyone has any information about his burial location I would like to hear from you. Hannah was living in Vermilion County, Illinois and listed as the head-of-household on the 1860 census. She also married again in 1860 to George Maris and moved to Sylvania, Liberty Township, Parke County, Indiana. She died 27 Dec 1883 and is buried in the Rush Creek Cemetery.

- Nantucket Historical Association: "The Quaker (Friends) Meeting House on Fair Street was erected circa 1838 by builder James Weeks and originally served as a Friends school for the Wilburite sect. John Boadle, a Quaker schoolmaster from London, was the teacher, and the school was called "John Boadle's School." In 1864, with the decline in the number of Friends on Nantucket, the school was converted into a meeting house and the large South Meeting House next door was sold and removed. The existing meeting house was purchased from the Friends in 1894 by the Nantucket Historical Association and served as its first museum."
