Village of Aniwa
The following is a synopsis from the Antigo Daily Journal, June 1, 1982, page 1
- Aniwa has historical ties to early railroading, logging and agriculture.
- Milwaukee Lake Shore & Western Railroad tracks reached Aniwa from Eland in 1880. The village of Aniwa was settled at the junction of a branch rail line that ran to the village of Mattoon.
- November 26, 1880, the village of Aniwa is Platted.
- April 13, 1882. H.G. Reed and C.I. Perkins filed a survey and plat of the comunity of Aniwa.
- The village was incorporated 1899 by referendum and George Goldrick was elected president on Dec 7th.
- During early years the village had three saw mills, a shingle shop, cabinet shop and bicycle rim or "hoop" factory.
- 1902, The Marion Telephone Company extended a line to the village.
- 1903, The Appleton Pickle and Canning Company came to town.
- 1904, Dick Moss built a market and slaughterhouse.
- 1905, The population reached about 600 and the village had three churches and a newspaper called "The Enterprise" published by J.H. Fitzgibbons. It also had grown to include the Aniwa Star Cheese Factory, a machine shop, a blacksmith and wagon shop, four general stores, a hardware store, a candy store, two livery stables, two dance halls and two hotels, the Carley and Hoffman House.
- 1905, The village had a small pox epidemic.
- 1908, The village had a tuberculosis epidemic.
- 1909, The village had a scarlet fever epidemic.
- 1910, A fire destroyed most of the village. Four complete blocks of buildings were leveled.
- 1919, The Citizen's State Bank opened.
- 1982, Aniwa celebrated its centennial.
