Lieutenant Zachariah Godbold was born in 1763 at Marion District, South Carolina, and during the American Revolution he served under General Marion (Marion's Men). He and his wife, Rachael, and their ten children moved to Alabama in 1810. His later years were spent in Baldwin County where he died at Old Blakeley on July 13, 1832, at the age of sixty-nine. He was buried at Saluda Hill Cemetery near Bromley, Alabama. Sunday, February 7, 1960, the Zachariah Godbold Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, held a dedication ceremony and placed a marker honoring the only known Revolutionary War Soldier's grave in Baldwin County - that of Lieutenant Zachariah Godbold. |
