Jan 1940.  A Mountain Eagle article says:

 

"Snow On Ground Ten Days, Streams Frozen Over, Schools Closed.

    The big snow that visited Jasper and Walker County ten days ago is still with us, but reduced in depth.  At first it measured from 14-17 inches deep at various places . . .

The temperature has been below zero here for several mornings . . .     Town Creek . . . has been frozen over three weeks, and the Warrior River (Lake Bankhead) has been frozen over about a week.  People are skating on the river at Cordova and Linn's Park, Lost Creek, Blackwater . . .    Traffic lights have been cut off because traffic is not heavy enough to justify them."
