In 1832, the Alabama Legislature created Randolph County from land ceded by the Creek Indians, naming the county for John Randolph, a Virginia statesman. The county seat was established in Wedowee.
All probate records were destroyed in a courthouse fire in 1897. This can make research difficult, but alternate sources can sometimes be used to overcome the loss of official records.
The public library in Roanoke contains a small collection of books on genealogy and local history.
There are a number of published books on Randolph County history and genealogy.
The Alabama Room of the Anniston-Calhoun County Public Library contains local history and genealogical records of Randolph County as well as Calhoun Clay, Cleburne, and Talladega counties.
The AlaBenton Genealogical Society meets in the Ayers Room of the Anniston-Calhoun County Public Library.
