The Fort Payne Landmarks Museum is housed in the old Fort Payne Depot built
by the Alabama Great Southern Railroad in 1891. This one-of-a-kind building is listed
in the National Register of Historic Places and was used as a passenger
station until 1970. The old Alabama sandstone building itself, an excellent example of Richardson
Romanesque architecture, is well worth a visit.
The Museum features an outstanding collection of Native American pottery, basketry, weapons, tools, and clothing. Many of the relics on display were discovered in the Fort Payne area, once home of the Cherokee Nation. However, the collection also includes many articles from tribes native to other parts of the country such as the Apache, Hopi, Navaho, Pueblo, and Seminoles. |
