FIRST GENERATION

1.  Jeremiah (Jerry) W. CLOUD Sr.1,2,3 was born between 1782 and 1786 in Wilkes County, Georgia.  He died on MAR 14 1861 in Austin County, Texas.  He was buried in Austin County, Texas.

Jeremiah's obituary says he was born in Twiggs cty GA in 1784.  But that county wasn't formed until 1809, it being formed from Wilkinson cty (itself being created from Creek cession in 1803).  Some believe he was born in Wilkes GA which was called St. Paul Parish before its formation in 1777.  We know that he lived in SC prior to his son H.G.W.'s marriage to Mary McDADE in 1828.

In 1729, Carolina was divided into both North and South Carolina and in 1732 part of SC became a part of Georgia.  The old 96th District in SC was divided into 5 counties in 1795, among them were Edgefield and Spartanburg.

A birthplace of Spartanburg has been suggested.  The book  "YOUNGBLOOD - ARMSTRONG AND ALLIED FAMILIES" by Frances Youngblood and Foelle Youngblood Bonner, say on p. 301, next-to-last paragraph: "Mary McDade ... married ... H.G.W. Cloud, son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Cloud, FORMERLY OF SOUTH CAROLINA. (Mar. Bk C, p. 311, Montgy, Ala.)  ..... (CAPS mine).  Additionally,  the McDADES they traveled with and married into were from the Spartanburg region.
Many living in Georgia at the beginning of the 1812 War fled to other states.  If Jeremiah lived in SC as stated, it would have probably been between 1812 and 1816, for we know he was in Alabama in 1816 and is on the 1830 census there.
He was married to Elizabeth (_____) about 1801.  He is listed on the 1830, Montgomery AL, census as between 40 and 49 years.  The ages he gave on the 1850 and 1860 censuses from Austin County, TX indicate he was born in 1786 though the year of 1784 is specified in his obituary. Moved from GA to Alabama about 1816 and is listed on the 1830 Montgomery County Alabama census.
A Jeremiah Cloud purchased land in Montgomery county as recorded on Certificates No. 11336 and No. 11337, both dated November 14th 1833, and both for 80.1 acres and on Certificate No. 1665, dated April 5th 1837 for forty acres.  These purchases were in the same area and time as others made by his relatives so it is supposed that these purchases were made by this Jeremiah Cloud.
He moved to the Republic of Texas prior to October of 1837 and received a 2nd class Headright grand from the Republic.
His obituary appeared in the April 6, 1861 Hempstead Courier and reads as follows:
"  Died, On Caney creek in this county, on the 14th ult., MR. JEREMIAH CLOUD, Sr., In the 77th year of his age.

"  Mr. C. was born in Twiggs Co., Georgia, in 1784; emigrated to Montgomery Co. Alabama in 1816, when he removed to this State, in which he lived up to the time of his death, sharing her joys and sorrows.

"  He leaves behind him what the best of us aspire to, an unsullied reputation; besides a numerous family, consisting of his first and only wife, who was the partner of his days for sixty years, six children, thirty four grand-children, and twenty-six great grand children; all of whom must be often reminded of his absence, and feel the want of his experienced counsel."

Elizabeth (_____) was born between 1784 and 1790 in Georgia.  She died before 1874 in Austin County, Texas and was buried in Austin County, Texas.  Jeremiah (Jerry) W. CLOUD Sr. and Elizabeth (_____) had the following children:

+2 i. William J. CLOUD.
+3 ii. Mary CLOUD.
+4 iii. Henry George Washington (H.G.W.) CLOUD.

He was married to Mary T. BATEMAN on MAR 12 1839 in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama.8  Montgomery Co. Alabama - Marriages - 1817-1850:  "Cloud, Henry G.W. to Mary T. Bateman, 16 Mar. 1839; 17 Mar. by James H. Judkins, J.P.", Book E, page 13

+33 i. Mary I.L. CLOUD.

6.  John Clark (J.C.) CLOUD Sr. was born in 1812 or 1815 in Georgia.  His tombstone, which is in a pasture near Milano, Milam County, Texas, says he died in February of 1868 at an age of 56 years, which would make his birth date 1812, but the 1860 census says he is 45, implying dob of 1815.  He came to Texas in 1836 from Alabama.  Enlisted as a private in the Milam Guards in Milam County, Texas in June 1861.  Moved to Comanche, Texas around 1870.
He was married to Mary Polly GRIFFIN (daughter of John W. GRIFFIN and Nancy (_____)) on JAN 7 1836 in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama.  Ellen Crawford wrote:  "John C Sr and Mary Griffin were married the 7th of Jan 1836 in Montgomery Co AL.  I believe that her father John Griffin came along with Jeremiah for he got a land grant dated the same as Jeremiah's and John's.  They are dated 1839 and states they have been in TX since 1836."
11  Mary Polly GRIFFIN was born in 1818 in Georgia.  She died before 1874.  Her date of death deduced from the sale  of her land, after her death, in 1874.  John Clark (J.C.) CLOUD Sr. and Mary Polly GRIFFIN had the following children:

+37 i. Mary E. CLOUD.
38 ii. Marion CLOUD was born in 1842 in Austin County, Texas.12  He died after 1861.  Death date is from the assumption that he died in the civil war.  Enlisted as a private in the Milam Guards in Milam County, Texas in June 1861.  His younger sister, Mary (Cloud) Rogers, said that he went to serve in the civil war at its beginning and never returned.

42 vi. Melissa CLOUD was born in 1852 in Austin County, Texas.  She died in 1870.
43 vii. Jerry CLOUD2 was born after 1860.  Originally had a birth date of 1832, but he signed an affidavit in 1882 saying he was a minor at the time of the deed transaction, in 1874, where his deceased mother's land was sold.  He was not on the 1860 census, so it could be conjectured he was born in the early  1860's.

7.  Andrew Jackson (Alex / A.J.) CLOUD was born in 1820 in Montgomery County, Alabama.  He was married to Nancy WOOD on MAY 2 1838 in Washington County, Texas.

+46 iii. Joseph Newton "Jasper" CLOUD.

8.  Elcena L. (E.L.) CLOUD was born in Alabama.   In Jeremiah's probate papers, her name is listed as "Elizabeth B. Cloud Gates".  Lura wrote (3-6-1998) that she'd obtained E.L. Cloud's and W.P. Gates' marriage license from Washington County and that her name was listed as "Elcena".  She was married to William P. GATES on JUL 25 1847 in Caney Bottom, Washington County, Texas.  Elcena L. JACKSON on SEP 30 1867 in Austin County, Texas.  Francis Marion (F.M. or Frank) CLOUD and Melissa C. JACKSON had the following children:

Cloud, died Sept 9 1871, aged 45 yrs 2 mos 7 ds"  He died on SEP 9 1871 in Milam County, Texas.
His middle name determined from the probate papers of his father-in-law, Samuel C. BOYD -- Montgomery County, Albama Orphans Court Record "H" pp 473-474:  "Elizabeth Jane Cloud and her husband Willliam Jasper Cloud" .... residents of Pike county.
He moved to Texas about 1851 with Elizabeth.  He is believed to have served in the Milam Guards of the Confederate Army (pvts W.J. Cloud, J.C. Cloud, F.M. Cloud, Jerry Cloud, and M.F. Cloud were enlisted on 6-16-1861.  W.J., J.C. and F.M. were all brothers -- sons of Jeremiah.  Though I don't know this for sure, I think it possible both Jerry and M.F. Cloud were JC's sons, Jerry and Marion.  I have no other Cloud whose name starts with an "M", in that time frame, who could have served and only one other "Jerry", Jeremiah Cloud II, eldest son of HGW.
He was married to Elizabeth Jane BOYD (daughter of Samuel BOYD and Elizabeth E. "Betsey" (_____)) on OCT 26 1848 in Montgomery County, Alabama.  Marriage recorded 6-24-1849 by Jas. A. McGee, J.P.  He was married to Elizabeth Jane BOYD on JUN 24 1849 in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama.

The home of his uncle William J. Cloud, in Pike county, is due West of Barbour county and he lived about 30 or 40 miles Southeast of his grandfather's home in Montgomery county.  Nancy FAISON was born about 1835 in Alabama.  Franklin COBB and Nancy FAISON had the following children:

He was married to Jane Elizabeth CALVERT (daughter of Major CALVERT and Caroline STEWARD) on JAN 15 1855 in Bellville, Austin County, Texas.21   Jane Cloud listed her marriage date as January 15th on her pension application.  The marriage records list January 30th, which may be the date it was recorded.   Jane applied for and received a Confederate Pension, on record in the Texas archives:  Pension roll listings:  Claimant: Cloud, Jane E.; Pension Number: 00118; County: Austin; Husband: Alexander Cloud.

Marriage records for John Marion Cloud are somewhat confusing. A marriage record in Waller County shows that a John Cloud married Annie Kelton on December 8, 1874. She was a daughter of Benjamin Franklin Kelton and Rachel Lindley. In the 1880 census for Montgomery County, next door to Waller County, can be found Anna Cloud. with daughter Allie, age 4, living with Hampton O'Banion and his wife, Rachel. Rachel had married Hampton O'Banion after the death of Benjamin Franklin Kelton. Anna is listed as widowed and Hampton's step-daughter. Annie and Allie are found living next door to Hampton and Rachel O'Banion in the 1900 census, Montgomery County, Texas.
Another marriage record for a John Cloud is found in Austin County, also near Waller County, The record shows that a John Cloud married Mrs. Mary Eliza Snell on March 6, 1877. In the 1870 census, Henry Cloud and his children, including 15 year old John, are two doors down from Thomas and Mary J. Snell (Thomas Snell and Mary Qualls married in Austin County on January 14, 1868), In the 1880 census, there is a John Cloud with wife, Mary Eliza, in Austin County, Texas, though they are both listed as mulatto, which could be a census taker error. Is this John Marion Cloud and Mary Eliza Snell?

He was married first to Martha Annie KELTON (daughter of Ben F. KELTON and Rachel LINDLEY) on DEC 8 1874 in Waller County, Texas.  John Marion  "J.M./Jim" CLOUD/BLACK and Martha Annie KELTON had the following children:

87 i. Allie CLOUD/BLACK was born in 1876.

Annie Charlotte SPEARE (daughter of Emanuel Ralph SPEARE) was born on FEB 18 1867 in England.  She died on SEP 4 1949 in Paoli, Garvin County, Oklahoma.  She was buried in Whitebead, Garvin County, I.T., Oklahoma.  John Marion  "J.M./Jim" CLOUD/BLACK and Annie Charlotte SPEARE had the following children:

33.  Mary I.L. CLOUD was born in 1832 in Alabama.

She was married to Joseph W. FRANCIS (son of (_____) FRANCIS) on AUG 16 1847 in Austin County, Texas.22  The children for this family deduced from census records (and assume that the Joseph and Mary Francis of the 1850 and the 1860 Austin County census are the same people.)  It would appear that Joseph Francis died between the 1870 and 1880 census.  1880 census shows Mary J. Francis, as head of household, with children, Joseph, M. E. and James C., still living at home with her.
Joseph W. FRANCIS was born in 1819 in Tennessee.  Mary I.L. CLOUD and Joseph W. FRANCIS had the following children:
