SSgt. Charles Luther Hutto, son of Robert Lee Hutto and Ophelia Frony Rachel Hutto, was born in Hybart, Monroe Co., Alabama on Feb 12 1920.   He was a  member of Co. L,  121 Infantry, 8th Infantry Division, 3rd Battalion.

The 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, 3rd Battalion, was called the "Gray Bonnets" and can be trace back before the Civil War.  During the Civil War, it was a southern regiment.   Sgt. C. L. Hutto was part of this regiment when it landed and fought a major battle on the beach at Normandy, France on July 8, 1944 with two other battalions.  The 121st became known as the Lost Battalion because they were split from the other organizations from August 7 - 18, 1944.  Again reunited with their battalion, they fought in a major battle in Brest, France, the headquarters for the Nazi U-boat (submarine) Division.  Located three hundred and twenty miles south west from Paris, fifty thousand Germans protected the U-boats stationed there .  The German general in charge had been ordered by Hitler to defend the city no matter how many lives were lost.  It was here, on September 7, 1944 that SSgt Charles Luther Hutto was killed in action, for which he received a Purple Heart
