EDWIN PEETE SMITH (1792-1834)

Submitted by Rae V. Calvert

Edwin Peete Smith, son of Nancy Clark (d.1832) and Edward Smith (d.1832) (Edward2, Edward1), was born 25 May 1792 in Greensville County, VA, and died between 25 June 1833, when he executed his Will, and 6 October 1834, when his Will was probated in Lowndes County, AL. He had purchased land in §29, Township 15, Range 16, Lowndes County, AL, on 7 February 1821, and his brother, Byrd C. Smith, purchased land in the same section on 30 December 1833.  Edwin P. also purchased tracts in §32, T15, R16 on 7 February 1821 and again on 17 February 1830.  On 13 February 1832, he and his brother, James H., purchased  tracts in §33, T15, R16.

In the Lowndes County 1830 census were:

Edwin P. Smith Slaves:
1 male 30-40 1 male under 10  1 female under 10
2 males 10-24  1 female 10-24
1 male 24-36  1 female 24-36
Total persons: 8

The Will of Edwin Peete Smith was executed on 25 June 1833 and probated 6 October 1834 in Lowndes County, AL.  He appointed his brothers, Benjamin J. and Hartwell V. Smith, as his executors and mentioned a minor daughter, Mary Jane Smith.  No wife is mentioned.

Edwin P. Smith's tombstone inscription in the Smith Family Cemetery, Hope Hull, Lowndes County, AL, reads:

"Sacred to the Memory of
Edwin P. Smith
who was born in Greensville
County, Virginia, May 25th
1792, and departed this
life August 19th 1834."

One daughter:

i  Mary Jane Smith married 28 April 1843 James Watkins Cook, Jr.

It appears that Mary Jane Smith Cook predeceased James W. Cook, and he married (2) Sally Graves.  A notice in the 1 April 1861 Montgomery Advertiser reported:

"Died in Midfield, her residence in Greensville County, Virginia, on the 15th instant (ultimo) [15 March 1861] Mrs. Sally Graves Cook, widow of James W. Cook, deceased.  She lived to the ripe age of 78 years, and died in great peace.  She leaves an only child, her son, James W. Cook, a gentleman well known in this city and in the county of Lowndes."
