WELCOME to the Lee County, AL GenWeb Home!

Lee County was created by the Alabama legislature on December 5, 1866 from portions of Macon, Russell, Tallapoosa and Chambers counties. If you cannot find data on your family members in Lee County before 1866, be sure and check these surrounding counties. Lee County was named for Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The county lies on the eastern part of the Black Belt. It is bordered by Chambers, Tallapoosa, Macon, and Russell counties, and on the east by the Chattahoochee River and the State of Georgia. It currently encompasses 609 square miles. The county seat is located at Opelika, which in the Creek Indian language means "big swamp."

My name is Cheryl & I am the CC for Lee County .  I reside in Lee County in Opelika. I will be adding more information as time and resources permit.  I would love any donations of data that visitors would like to add. Contributors will retain full control over the data and receive full credit for the donation. Please contact me if you have anything you would like to contribute. All contributions will be welcomed. I would like to start a census index in near future, so I will need transcribers and proof readers too.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please contact  Cheryl

I would like to thank Delilah Evans and John Simmons for their support of genealogy research  in Lee County and their contributions of data and photos for this web site.
