Luxapallila Daughters of the
American Revolution Scholarship
Information
Adylise Sherrod Grimsley Memorial
Scholarship
The Luxapallila Chapter Daughters of
the American Revolution in Fayette,
Alabama, held a Historical
Walkathon on October 25, 2003, at
10:00 a.m. beginning at the Old
Train Depot Museum. From the Depot,
the walkathon proceeded to the
courthouse, the old post office (new
city hall), the new post office, the
library, and ended at the Civic
Center. Historical presenters were at
each stop to tell the
historical significance of the site.
The purpose of the walkathon was to
raise money for local scholarships
to Bevill State Community College.
The Luxapallila Chapter of
the Daughters of the American
Revolution was organized on October
30, 1952, by Mrs. Alva McGriff
Grimsley, Sr. Mrs. Grimsley was
well-known in the community for her
love of history and community
service. She took a lot of pride in
her ancestors and was very active in
other lineage organizations such as
the United Daughters of the
Confederacy and the Colonial Dames.
The new scholarship was
named the Adylise Sherrod
Grimsley Memorial Scholarship in
honor of Mrs. Grimsley and her
contributions to the Luxapallila
Chapter DAR and Fayette County. The
annual scholarship to Bevill State
will be awarded to a worthy senior
in Fayette, Lamar, or Marion
Counties. It is the goal of the
Luxapallila Chapter to raise enough
money each year to award several
scholarships instead of just one.
The National
Socity DAR awards a number of
scholarships. Applications for
the scholarships may be obtained
from your high school counselor, our
chapter, or from the National
Society. Each applicant must
be sponsored by a DAR chapter.
The Luxapallila Chapter would be
pleased to talk with any qualified
applicant about sponsorship.
