Aged 113 (evidently an error for 71). and a
resident of Morgan County; private, Massachusetts
Militia State Troops; enrolled on September 17,
1833, under act of Congress of June 7, 1832,
payment to date from March 4, 1831; annual
allowance, $33.33; sums received to date of

BAGWELL, Frederick.
(Fayette Co.)
Revolutionary soldier with the rank of private in
the North Carolina Troops. He served from
January or February of 1779 until July or August
of 1779 in Capts. Tarrant's and Reynolds'
Companies, Col. Farmer's Regt., as a substitute
for his father, Daniel Bagwell, who was drafted in
Wake County, NC. He was in the Battle of
Stono. From April 1780 until October 1780,
he served under Capts. Lewis Bleecher and Hillsman,
Col. Lightly. He was in the Battle of Gates'
defeat at Camden. He served other tours
which included four times as a substitute, once
for his father, once for Jesse Richards, once for
Thompson Burch, and for Arthur Pope. He applied
for pension on January 20, 1824, under act of June
7, 1832, (W-10-386) as a resident of Fayette
County. A pension certificate (No. 5-088)
was issued to Mary (Polly) Bagwell, his widow, on
December 10, 1851, at the Tuscaloosa, Alabama,
agency.
In 1840, Bagwell was aged 80 and his annual
pension was $50. The last payment of his
widow's pension was made on March 10, 1853.
He married Polly Hill in North Carolina ca. 1773.
They had 7 children. |

BAIRD, John.
(Fayette Co.) From Act of Alabama, 1842, it states, "Whereas,
John Baird has, from his patriotic service during
the late war with Great Britain, been disabled
from procuring a subsistence by manual labor, and
this General Assembly being at all times willing
to compensate, as far as it can be properly done,
persons who have devoted their body and treasure
to the defense of their county: Therefore,
That the aforesaid John Baird, be, and he is
hereby authorized to hawk and peddle in any county
in this State, free and exempt from all charges
for licenses which are imposed upon other persons:
Provided, that nothing herein contained, shall be
construed to authorize the said John Baird to
retail spirituous liquors: Approved,
February 14, 1843. |

CLEMENTS,
CULLIVER.

The paternal grandfather of
Dr. B. F. Wilson, also came from Tennessee to
Tuscaloosa with his son William, in 1818, and
there died, over thirty years ago. His maternal
grandfather, Culliver Clements, came from Georgia
to Tuscaloosa, in 1818, and to Pickens County the
next year, settled the place where now lives John
L. Guyton, and subsequently removed to the present
residence of Dudly Pruitt, where he died in 1840.
Jesse Clements was his son. Both these ancestors
were soldiers of the Revolution邑ilson was at
Guilford Courthouse battle; Clements was a South
Carolina partisan soldier, in the trying times of
Marion and his whig comrades. The descent is said
to be Scotch-Irish on both sides. Smith,

Carolina Militia. He was a resident of
Fayette County in 1840 when he was aged 80.
His annual allowance was $36.66. He applied
for a pension and was placed on the pension roll,
November 15, 1833, when he was about 74 years of
age. |

Revolutionary claim in South Carolina. (Salley's

R-T, p. 264) Thomas Hogg, of Newberry District,
S.C., married Martha Chandler, daughter of John
Chandler, of this district. After their marriage
they moved into Greene or Wilkes County, Ga. where
their first child, Joseph Lewis Hogg, was born.
Shortly after they removed to Tuscaloosa County,
Ala., where Thomas Hogg served in the State
Senate, 1819-1820. Besides Joseph Lewis Hogg there
were two other sons, Thomas Hogg and Stephen

patriot from Raleigh (Wake Co.), North Carolina,
was the son of Revolutionary patriot,
James Olive.
He was married to Monicah Massey, daughter of
Revolutionary patriot,
Richard Massey,
all of North Carolina. These patriots are on
the DAR roll and listed the in Patriot Index.
It is believed that Jesse Olive died in the
portion of Tuscaloosa that is now Fayette County
and is probably buried near his son Richard Calvin
Olive in a cemetery just to the right of the
Highway going into Berry, Alabama from Highway 43
at Berry Junction. |
