We sympathize with Mr. Riley ALEXANDER in the death of his bright little child, which occurred very suddenly Friday night near Moulton. MA 12-8-1898 Contributed by Charity Goodwin

Lawyers Almon of Russellville and Tuscumbia came up last Saturday to attend the burial of their brother, Mr. L. D. ALMON who died at Littlesville on Friday before.  Dow had been in feeble health several years, and his death was not unexpected.  He leaves a wife and 5 small children-- the oldest being 9 years old and the youngest only 2 months old-- together with a widowed mother and five brothers to lament his death.  It is sad to see a man taken away from his young family under such circumstances, but we should find consolation even in the darkest hour of our existence.  Every cloud, no matter how dark has a silver lining and in this instance the bereaved ones ought to thank God that Dow has been removed form this to a brighter world, where pain and death can never enter.  For a long time his life was a burthen to him, yet he held on to it with a tenacity which showed how dearly he loved his family.  It is indeed pleasant to know that his family have fallen into good hands, and that the wolf can never enter their portal.  Within the past year four Almons have passed away, and three of them have been buried on Sunday at the same grave yard. (Contributed by Mary Almon Pugh MA 1-28-1892)

Mrs. Martha Lucinda BOOKMAN (nee Isbell) was born near Decatur, Lawrence county, Ala., January 8, 1824; died in Navasota, Grimes county, Texas, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. S. Craig, at 2.25 p.m., November 24, 1903, at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 16 days. She was married to Jesse Bookman, at Jasper, Texas. October 21,
1856, and removed to Prairie Plains, Grimes county, Texas, the same year. She professed religion and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in early life. Her family was among the early settlers of this country. Her Grandfather, Godfrey Isbell, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and came of Irish descent. Her father, Jabez Isbell, was a soldier in the War of 1812; was also an Indian War soldier, and fought at the battle of Horse Shoe, Alabama. He died at the age of 75,
and was buried at Prairie Plains. Sister Bookman was one of those sweet-spirited, lovable women whom to know was to love. The writer knew her from his infancy to the day of her death. It can be truly said of her that her pleasure and happiness consisted most in making life pleasant for others. Her husband's home was the preacher's home. I have known them to entertain every member of presbytery in their home several times. She was of a bright, cheerful disposition, always ready and
willing to meet the responsibilities of life with true Christian courage. I never knew her to speak a harsh, unkind word about any one. She was always ready to throw the mantle of charity around the faults of others. She was the mother of five children. Her husband and three children preceded her to the glory world. The two remaining are Pickens Butler Bookman and Mattie J. Bookman Craig, both of whom reside in Navasota, Texas. I rejoice to say that they, too, are devoted Christians, following the example set by their godly parents and walking in His steps. P. B. Bookman is an elder in the Prairie Plains church. While the bereft children weep at their loss, it is not as those who have no hope; for their mother has only gone on before to welcome them home when the blessed Master shall say to them, "It is enough, come up higher." To the children I will say: Emulate her godly life and Christian example, and you will surely go to where she now dwells, in a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."
"A precious one from you has bone,
   A voice you loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in your home
   Which never can be filled.
God in his wisdom has recalled
The boon his love had given,
And though the body slumbers here,
The soul is safe in heaven."
--W. R. Edwards.

Mrs. Hefner was afflicted with a complicated chronic disease, which had confined her to a bed of suffering for near four months. She suffered more than tongue can tell, but bore them with christian fortitude, feeling that her light afflictions were destined to work out for her a crwon of rejoicing at God's right hand. She was married on the 20th of August, 1868, and wanted only 4days to make out the fist year of matrimonial life. She joined the Methodist Church when quite young, and from her cradle up was a kind, duitful and affectionate chid and after mariage was a kind and devoted wife, and was loved by all who formed her acquaintance. Before dying she called the family and friends around her and requested them to meet her in Heaven. She admonished her youngest brother, who had but a day or two previous professed religion, to hold out faithful. With her arms locked around the neck of her husband, she calmly fell asleep. Her parents and relatives are consoled by the hope that she is happy in the Father's Kingdom, where sorrow in unknown and death never enters. "Then mourn not that to her with white garment is given, For blessed are they who have died in the Lord". MA-Aug. 27, 1869

Extract from THE CHRISTIAN MONTHLY, edited and published by J. M. Pickens,Mountain Home, Lawrence County, Alabama, 1870 and 1871.(Two bound volumes deposited with the Library of the School of Religion, Butler University, Indianapolis,Indiana, 1945.

May 1871, page 237.
Died at Mountain Home, Alabama, February 9th, 1871, William G. PICKENS, aged seventy-six years, eleven months
and twenty days. The deceased was born in Abbeville District, South Carolina, February 20, 1794, and removed with his
father’s family to Maury County, Tennessee, about the year 1806 and in the early settlement of that county.  In obedience to his country’s call and while quite young, he served in General Jackson’s army in the war with the Indians
and participated in a number of its hardest fought battles.
On November 7, 1816, he was married to Charlotte Bruce and continued to reside in his adopted State and near the homestead of his father till near two years before his death when he removed to Mountain Home, Alabama. He became a member of the Christian Church early in the Reformation, practiced virtue and maintained a high degree of integrity and honor.  Though a man of more than ordinary intellect and possessing an education superior to that usually afforded in the
days of his youth, he was quiet and retired, loved his home and preferred industrial pursuits to the more noisy spheres of life. His memory is fondly cherished by family and friends and not least by her who was his faithful companion through more than fifty years; but age and infirmity admonish that she too must follow soon.(Contributed by:[email protected]

If we had the selection of an epitaph for the grave of Bro. Jas. M. PICKENS we would write the following: "Blessed are the Peace-Makers, for they shall be called the children of God." He lost his life in his unselfish efforts to save that of a friend.

Death has been in our midst again, and sorrow swells the bosoms of loved ones.  J. C. WASSON, the loving husband, affectionate father and honored citizen is no more.  Mr. Wasson was born in Maury County, Tennessee, October 30, 1817, came to Lawrence County, Alabama, about 1834, married to Miss Nancy Reneau November 30, 1843.  They raised six children, five of whom are loved, respected and highly esteemed, as Christian men and women.  The other, just as he was budding into manhood, with a bright and promising future before him, was called to his home on high.  Mr. Wasson was honest, upright and industrious.  Though he never attached himself to any church, he made a profession of faith in Christ about six weeks before his death, and left to his family bright evidence of his acceptance with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  To you my sister, who walked life's pathway with him for almost a half century, I would say weep not,
Your husband awaits you on the happy golden shore

Where the faithful part no more

And may you, dear children, meet your father,
Where the harps of angels ring,

And the blest forever sing,

In the palace of the king.

God comfort the sorrowing ones.
