I am looking for details of this murder case. All the time I was growing up, I was told Fred Ashford was killed in a duel or that his horse just came walking home with him on it, dead.  I'd like to know what happened.  Does anybody have an account of this? or letters? anything... 
Here is what the newspaper said:

Dec. 30- Fred Ashford killed by Felix Brown at Courtland. (Leighton News 8 Jan 1897)
F. T. BROWN, who shot and killed Fred ASHFORD in Courtland a few days ago, has had his preliminary trial and was bound over in a bond of $2,000 to await the action of the next grand jury. (Leighton News 8 Jan 1897)
FREDERICK ELGIN6 ASHFORD  (THOMAS HARRISON5, THOMAS HARRISON4, JOHN3, WILLIAM2, MICHAEL1) was born June 21, 1863 in Limestone Co, AL, and died December 30, 1896 in Courtland, Lawrence, AL.  He married LUCIE LEE BYRD September 27, 1882 in Columbia, TN, daughter of BOLLING BYRD and GRIZELLE TORIAN.  She was born December 08, 1862 in Courtland, Lawrence, Al, and died December 30, 1937 in Courtland, Lawrence, Al. DANIEL & BROWN Jan 2004
James Lemuel Daniel married Sarah Jane Brown.    Had the following six children:    Itaska Lela Ada Daniel;  Sarah Katherine Daniel;  Martha Booker Daniel;  Walter Woodson Daniel;  Giles Ambrose Daniel;  and Nettie Bell Lydell Daniel  (b. 1894 - Nettie was the baby of the family).     James Lemuel Daniel and Sarah Jane Brown (Daniel) died within a month of each other, apparently of pneumonia.    Nettie was a young child at that time.  Am looking for any further information on James & Sarah.   Any replies would be appreciated!   Thank you, Virginia Sanders Mylius

According to the 1930 census, John R. and Sadie Mathews, ages 46 (should be 41?) and 35, respectively, were residing at Household 246/253 in Precinct #7 of Lawrence County, Alabama along with their children:  Julia age 16, Lula age 14, Herman age 12, Hubert age 7, and Dorothy age 4.  Another daughter, Cletie born about 1913 was no longer in the household.  John R. Mathews is believed to have been born in 1889 to Enick Houston Mathews and Mary E. Does anyone have any information on the burial site of Joseph M Tweedy d1857,Joseph MM tweedy(son), and Mary Martin Tweedy(wife) d1833? They lived in Limestone County untill 1842 (was JP there) when they moved  to Lawrence County. Joseph M and his son Joseph MM both died near Courtland but are not buried in the Courtland Cemetery. ALLEY/ALLEE Feb 2004
Looking for any information of Isaac Alley (or Allee) and his family.  Originally from Henrico County, Virginia, he lived in Lawrence County for a few years in the 1820’s, then continued on to Saline County, Arkansas.  He is known to have married Sarah Walden on 10/19/1824 in Lawrence County, although the records don’t show their marriage.

I am searching for information on a Joseph West who married Sarah (Sallie) McGuire.  The only information I have on them is that Sarah was born in 1785, the daughter of William McGuire and Mary Shirley McGuire.  She married Joseph West and they moved to Lawrence County, Alabama, on the Tennessee River.  I would love to connect with someone who can give me information on Joseph and Sallie West.  I have all of Sallie's siblings but cannot find out anything regarding her.  Thank you, Linda Pitts

I am looking for information on the parents of Isaac P. Reed (1814-1888) and Elizabeth Henderson (1816-1887).  They were married in Lawrence Co., AL in 1837 per marriage record.  Isaac's father said to be John REED b. 1776.  Elizabeth's parents said to be Robert Henderson (b. 1785-d. 1858) and Margaret Pickens (b. 1785 d 1869).  HENDERSON and REED families were living in Gober and Ladonia, Fannin Co, TX ca. 1880.

Searching for information about John R. Jones and daughter Elmetha.  They were living in the Landersville area in the 1880 census.  Elmetha married Thomas Prince, what happened to John R.?  John R. was born in NC about 1834,
and seems to have been in Texas about 1862 when Elmetha was born.  Did he have other children born in Texas?  Did he marry after 1880 when the census said he was a widower?  Would appreciate any clues as to the whereabouts of

I'm looking for any info on the Garvin family, ie Jacob or Martha ... they would be my ggg grandparents, parents of Nancy Ann Garvin who married NR Lackey and migrated to Texas in 1860.  I know it's a long shot but I'm so far away and it seems that La,Co was the hub that brought many together.  I believe that Nancy was NA as she looks very dark in the pics I have seen.  NR was Irish and first generation as his father came over from Ireland in the 1700s.  Elizabeth

My great-great grandmother was Emiline Cooper, and she was the first wife of James Madison Gray (1817-1880).  In the cemetery where James Madison Gray is buried is the grave of Noah Cooper (1803-1875).  Does anyone know whether Noah Cooper is the father of Emiline Cooper?  Emiline would have died in approximately 1846, so she missed the 1850 census. Her grave has also not been found, but it is believed to be in Lawrence County.

I am looking for information about the daughters of Dr. Stephen Berry West. He died 31 May 1862 in Seven Pines, VA. during the Civil War.
I have info that he carried his wife and two daughters back to his wife`s parents in Lawrence County when he went to War. The daughters were Mary West (d. 1951) married John Stephenson and Dixie (d. 1949) married Charles Speake.  They would be my first cousin 3 times removed.  My Father carried our family to visit two elderly ladies (who I believe were kin folk) who live in a two story old home that looked like a plantation in Lawrence County, AL in the mid `40`s.  They showed us civil war guns, uniforms, and etc. Can any one give me information about these two ladies and where they lived? My great grandfather was William Porter Henry who was born in 1820 in Lawrence county Alabama. I am trying to find his father and mother's names. William Porter Henry was married to Catherine Johnston, daughter of William Johnston who also lived in Lawrence county, Alabama. My grandfather, William Porter Henry, was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister and came to Texas in 1848 with his wife and children, James F. Henry, Emily, Mary Catherine, and Thomas. I am attempting to find out why my ggggrandfather Thomas J. Looser moved to Lawrence Co. from Chambers County.  Also, why his son, John Henry Looser added an "i" to the name. Looking for any information on Alexander HEFLIN, b. 13 Nov 1804 in Athens, AL, son of James Heflin, Jr. & Rev and Nancy Thurmond, Alexander's wife was Sarah (Sallie) MORGAN, b. Franklin Co. TN. dau. of Isaac Morgan & Unknown.  Alexander moved with his family to Lawrence Co. AL before 1870 Census. The family appears on the 1870 Lawrence Co. AL Census. 
Other children are: Martha M. b. 1831; James Henry "Tennessee Jim" b. 1833; Terrell Melvine or Melvina, b. 1835;
Rachael C. b. 1840; Patsey, b. 1846; and Lola, b. 1845. Alexander HEFLIN & Sallie's daughter, Julia Ann HEFLIN, is my
g-grandmother.  She married H. C. JOHNSTON, son of Samuel Pinkney JOHNSTON & Sarah Ann BELL, in Moulten, AL on 25 Dec 1865 at the home of her father Alexander, with her brother James H. Heflin as bondsman.  My g-grandparents, H. C. and Julia Ann (HEFLIN) JOHNSTON appear on the 1870 & 1880 Census for Lawrence Co. AL.  They moved to Hardin Co. TN then to Tishomingo Co. MS where Julia Ann died 16 Aug 1918.  Within the family it is said her body was shipped back to AL to be buried with her parents, but I can find no record of that.  I do not know where she is buried, nor her parents.  They lived at Courtland.  Would love to find her burial place, and her parents too.
H. C. JOHNSTON is buried in Tishomingo Co. MS, he died 1930.Any help on this family will be greatly appreciated.

I am desperate to find any information and possibly the grave site of a Joseph Linn Gray.  I understand he came from Tennessee and was married to a Bettie Summer Alexander.  He came to the Moulton area with his sons Greenberry, Jake Montecue, William Summer and Joseph L Jr.  He was a farmer and purchased 40 acres of land on Sept 10, 1834 on County Road 177 currently owned by Thomas Craig..  I need to know where he came from in Tennessee and his ancestors.  I've stuck on this for years.
