Jonathan Gray (1785-1869)
Jonathan Gray was born in Fayette Co, Ky. He fought in the
Creek Wars with Andrew Jackson, and was a captain in the army
Jackson led to New Orleans where the Battle of New Orleans was
fought in l8l5. Gray returned to Fayette, Ky, married Pheby
Grimes, a relative of Daniel Boone, and then moved to Lawrence
County in about l818-20. Jonathan owned four plantations in Lawrence County,
and had about 26 slaves in l850. In1839, he was a host at
the reception held in Courtland for Andrew Jackson and James K.
Polk. He died in l869. This photo was made sometime
in the l850s.
