Jonathan Gray was born in Fayette Co, Ky.  He fought in the Creek Wars with Andrew Jackson, and was a captain in the army Jackson led to New Orleans where the Battle of New Orleans was fought in l8l5.  Gray returned to Fayette, Ky, married Pheby Grimes, a relative of Daniel Boone, and then moved to Lawrence County in about l818-20.
Jonathan owned four plantations in Lawrence County, and had about 26 slaves in l850.  In1839, he was a host at the reception held in Courtland for Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk.  He died in l869.  This photo was made sometime in the l850s.
