Generation No. 1

1. Charles1 Hamilton was born 1750 in Scotland, and died 24 Nov 1818 in Wayne, Ky. He married Hannah Henry 23 Dec 1777 in Lincoln Co, N. C., daughter of William Henry and Hannah Tanner. She was born 1753 in Pa, and died May 1850 in Wayne Co, Ky.

Notes for Charles Hamilton:
Charles and Hannah were the parents of 14 children, two died in infancy. He had been a Revolutionary War soldier, enlisting in the 6th SC Regiment on Apr. 15, 1776 for an 18 month tour of duty, and fighting in the Battle of Sullivan's Island. Following his marriage in 1777, he was with the North Carolina militia, serving in the battles of Ramsour's Mill, Hanging Rock, Camden, King's Mountain (where he was slightly wounded), Guilford Courthouse, and Eutaw Springs. His name was sometimes spelled Hambleton - it is believed that he immigrated from Scotland, settling in Lincoln Co, NC - later Madison Co, Ky. Because records were lost in a fire, Hannah never received a widow's pension from his military service (she outlived him by 33 years).

8. Andrew2 Hamilton (Charles1) was born Abt. 1795 in Madison Co, Ky. He married Elizabeth Wade 29 Dec 1817 in Wayne, Ky, daughter of Joseph Wade and Margaret Mounce. She was born 06 Feb 1797 in Wayne Co, Ky, and died 30 Jul 1857 in Lawrence Co, Al.

Notes for Andrew Hamilton:
Andrew and Elizabeth were the parents of 5 boys, then 5 girls - 10 children in all (two of the boys died early). They moved to Lawrence Co, Alabama around 1820 and were still there in 1850, at which time his occupation was a miller. Their land was known as the Hamilton Mill Place (it was a grist and saw mill near Chalybeate Springs- eighty acres was homeland and another eighty acres was the mill). Most of his brothers and sisters had moved to Morgan Co, Indiana. We are unsure of when Andrew died, but Rick Wallace, the husband of our distant cousin, Myrna Watson Wallace, found a grave site in the old Watson Cemetery that is Elizabeth's. It has her birth date as Feb. 2, 1796 (all other sources have it as Feb. 6, 1797) and her death date as July 30, 1852 (there was an epidemic of bloody flux that year). Next to her grave is that of her youngest child, Almira, who died a week earlier. The cemetery has very few headstones that are still legible and is too overgrown to visit in the summer months, but we can assume that Andrew is also buried there.

Notes for Elizabeth Wade:
Rick Wallace, who is married to a descendant of Elizabeth's, believes he found her grave in the old Watson Cemetery, a few miles east of Oakville, southeast of Moulton. The tombstone was one of the few that was discernable, and the one next to it belonged to her daughter, Almira. The birth date on Elizabeth's tombstone said she was born Feb. 2, 1796.

She married Jacob Dietiker 12 Feb 1852 in Lawrence Co, Alabama, son of Jacob Dietiker and Maria Friker. He was born 28 Oct 1820 in Thalheim , Argau, Switzerland, and died 10 Jul 1888 in Nashville, Tn.

Notes for Mary Elizabeth Hamilton:
In the 1900 Census, it shows Mary E. was the mother of 7 children (the only one who lived to adulthood was Henry Gottlieb) - she was then living on the corner of Deluge and Stevens Streets in Nashville. Known as the "little Grandma", she carried a pistol as she collected rents from the various properties that Jacob had purchased in the downtown area with Peter Brunold. Mary Elizabeth was truly the "blue blood" of the family, having descended from early American settlers who emigrated from the British Isles. A crack shot, she was said to have staved off Union soldiers who wanted to exchange mules for her horses, saying she couldn't kill them all, but she would get as many as she could! Mary E. outlived her husband by 29 years, dying at the age of 84. The story goes that she had been staying with her son's family and had an argument with critically ill Barbara. She went home to her bed, letting the fire go out, and was found dead five days later. Henry was caring for his wife and thought his mother hadn't returned because she was still angry. The women were buried at the same time.

Notes for Jacob Dietiker:
Jacob changed the spelling of his name when he came to America in 1848 (e's to a's). According to the emigration record in Switzerland, he was bound for St. Louis, but we have no evidence he ever went there. It is believed he came in through Florida and continued up to Lawrence County (Alabama). Jacob is listed in the 1850 census as a house carpenter, age 28 (he was almost 30), living with the Liggon family. He met Mary Elizabeth Hamilton while helping build a girl's school - they married in 1852 (marriage license record - Book A, page 71) against her parents' wishes (he was 31 and she was 18) but her family eventually came to accept the match. Later that same year, he bought 80 acres of undeveloped land outside of Courtland (bisected by the present Hy. 33) - we were told there had been a log cabin there (now torn down - perhaps the five babies they lost are buried nearby - there are no birth or death records). This lovely forested acreage has been in the possession of the Wheeler family since the end of the Civil War, as is most of the land surrounding it. In 1860, Jacob purchased three oversized lots a block from the railroad station in downtown Courtland (nos. 60,61, and 62 - facing Academy between Alabama and College - we visited the site and the houses standing there were all built since the 1940's, but someone in the Lawrence Co. Archives thought that he had been involved in constructing some of the stately antebellum homes in Courtland). According to the 1860 census, Jacob's land value was $1200 and his net worth, $2500. After coming to Nashville in the mid-1860's, Jacob worked for the railroads with another Swiss immigrant named Peter Brunold - both men excelled at carpentry and cabinetmaking and fashioned the interiors of pullman and private passenger cars. A secondary business venture was real estate - whenever they had $100, they would each put in $50 and buy a lot in the downtown area, build a house on it and rent it out. There is a story that Jacob was picked up and thrown in jail for a period of time because the Union soldiers were unsure of his political leaning, during which time, Mary Elizabeth took their children and went back down to her family in Alabama. We know the little girl, Ann E. (Emma, age 1 month, in the 1860 Lawrence Co. census) died at age 6 of smallpox and is buried in City Cemetery. It followed that Jacob's only living son, Henry, and Peter's only living daughter, Barbara, grew up and married in 1879. In the 1886-88 City Directory, Peter and Anna were living with Jacob and Mary Elizabeth. After their deaths, other descendants had to give depositions to prove that Henry was the rightful heir to the downtown properties (they hadn't left any wills). All are buried in the Henry Gottlieb Diatikar plot in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Notes for Henry Gottlieb Diatikar:
For 35 years, Henry Gottlieb was a prominent banker with Fourth and First National Bank, where he was manager of the Stockyards branch. He was also active in the Masons and the Second Presbyterian Church. In 1915, Henry purchased farms in Goodlettsville and Bordeaux (the Una farm adjacent to Central State on Hyde's Ferry Rd.) to keep his sons out of World War 1. He borrowed the money to do so and later paid the mortgages by selling his downtown Nashville properties. At one time, the Diatikars had adjacent property with the Gassers, following which, two of Henry's children married two of Edward's children. In 1886-88, they were living at 1229 N. College (3rd Ave) and by 1910, in the lovely old Ratterman house at 1215 Fifth Avenue N. in Germantown. Following the death of Barbara, Henry went to live with his sons at the farm in Goodlettsville on Shackle Island Rd. His will in 1930 distributed the property in this manner: 3/10ths to Henry, 2/10ths to Elroy (Pat), 2/10ths to Mamie, 1/10th to Albert (John), 1/10th to Clara and Evelyn (Pete's wife and daughter), and 1/10th to Clara (Addie). These last three didn't keep their portions and when the farm was sold in 1951 for $10,000, the only owners were Henry, Mamie, and Pat.

Notes for Elroy (Pat) Diatikar:
Elroy (Pat) and Katherine (Katy) were one of the Diatikar/Gasser combinations, the other was Clara (Addie) and Frank. They started out at Violet Hill Farm with brothers Henry and Albert (John), trying to make a go at farming after their father had gone to so much trouble and expense to save his boys from the trenches. Henry was the only one to enjoy and stay with it - Pat and John went to work at Du Pont in the company town of Old Hickory, near to Andrew Jackson's home place.

Katy was a tomboy and loved to tease her siblings. She also was the baby sitter/playmate in the family. Katy was a unique individual and everyone's favorite "granny" - her legacy was that she could make any grandchild feel that he or she was more special than the others. Katy outlived her husband by some 35 years, spending the last five at the home of her daughter, June, after suffering a debilitating stroke.

Notes for Clara Louise (Addie) Diatikar:
"Addie" was brought up in a refined manner and her parents disapproved of her marriage. Notes for Frank Gasser:
Frank was the wild one in the family, but Addie loved her "blue-eyed darlin" in spite of all his carousing. He leased land on the Luke Lea plantation for his dairy farm and probably operated a roadhouse there with bootleg whiskey, entertainment, and cockfighting. His kids had the run of the property and loved their daddy because he was so adventurous and fun.
