Circuit Court Lawrence County September Term 1827
Be it remembered that heretofore trust as a Circuit Court began
and held for Lawrence County and State of Alabama at the Court
House in the town of Moulton. on the third Monday in the
September 1827. Present the Honorable John Gayle, Jr. Esq., Judge
of said Court investured in, determined about. Wherein the State
of Alabama was plaintiff and John Gilliam was defendant in the
words and figures following to wit:
The State of Alabama Circuit Court September Term in the year
1825. The County of Lawrence Grand Jurors for said State, elected
and empanelled, sworn and charged to inquire for the body of
Lawrence County aforesaid upon their oath present that John
Gilliam, late of said county, yeoman, on the tenth day of June,
in the year 1825, with force and said county in and upon one,
Meredith Alsup, , did make an assault with a rifle then and there
loaded with gun powder and leaden ball, which he, the said John
Gilliam then and there in both his hands had and held in and upon
the thigh of him, the said Meredith Alsup, then and there did
discharge and shoot off, giving to him, the said Meredith Alsup,
then and there with the leaden ball aforesaid so as aforesaid out
of said gun discharge and shot off by said John Gilliam, on the
said thigh of him, the said Meredith Alsup, one grevious and
dangerous wound with the intent, him, the said Meredith Alsup,
then and there feloniously, willfully of his malice aforethought
to kill and murder, contrary to the form of the Statute on such
case made and provided and against the peace and tranquility of
the State of Alabama, and the Jurors aforesaid upon their oath
aforesaid do further present that John Gilliam on the day and
year aforesaid, with force and arms in the county aforesaid in
and upon the said Meredith Alsup, did make assault and him the
said Meredith Alsup did then and there beat against the peace and
tranquility of the State of Alabama

On which Indidment the following endorsement even made to wit,
"A True Bill, John S. White, the foreman of the Grand Jury
Sept 23, 1825" State of Alabama To the Sheriff of Lawrence
County, Greetings. You are
Lawrence County hereby commanded to take the body of John
Gilliam, wherever he may be found in your county and him safely
keep do that you have this body before the Judge of our Circuit
Court now in session at the Court House in the town of Moulton to
answer a charge of the State of Alabama against him for an
assault on the body of George Brazle with intent to murder.
Herein fail not and have then and there this wit.
