The Ashford Cemetery is located in Lawrence County, AL, T 4S, R 8W, NE1/4 of S23.  It is in the middle of a field, 
about 1 ½ miles west of Courtland on Hwy 20/72W about 1/2 mile north of Rock Pond and the bridge on Hwy 20/72W, 
where the old 20/72W merges back into the new Courtland bypass.  Ashford Cemetery is located on private property.

The Ashford family burying ground was on the estate of Rev. J.B. Lorance, who was pastor of Courtland 
Presbyterian Church from about 1872 to 1897.

Saunder's Early Settlers in Alabama - Alva Elgin Ashford was reared and educated in AL. 
He was a farmer by occupation and owned 1300 acres of land in Lawrence Co., near Courtland.
During the Civil War, Alva Elgin raised and equipped an infantry, which became Company C, the 
35th AL Infantry at his own expense. He attained rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was elected to 
the state legislature in 1865.

Moulton Advertiser - Mar 3, 1871 owned "Tweedy and Ashford's", Grocery, Drygoods, partners 
with R. E. Tweedy.

In 1878 - A. E. Ashford adopted two girls, Clara and Josephine Sanders. Their parents, 
Oliver Perry Sanders and Josephine (Carolyn's Fletcher's sister), both died of Yellow Fever in MS.

estate of Rev. J. B. Lorance, pastor of Pres. Church (Sept 24, 1832-11/23/1896) 
(Ed went to Philadelphia to medical school) practiced in Madison Co., came back to Courtland in 1870.
