TEMPLE SARGENT

1. From the "Dictionary of Alabama Biography", Volume IV, 1978, page 1528, The Reprint Co, Publishers, by Thomas McAdory Owen:

"SERGEANT, TEMPLE, member Alabama legislature, was born December 2, 1781 in
Caswell County, N.C., and died in Russellville, Alabama, August 10, 1850. He
represented Franklin County in the legislature in 1819, 1820, 1823, 1827, and
1834; was a deacon in the Baptist Church for many years. Married: (1) to a
daughter of Major RUSSELLl, who settled in Russell valley, for whom it was
named; (2) to a Miss LESTER. Children 1. Oran; 2. James; 3. Roan, who resides in Caddo, Okla."


2. From "Alabama Records, Volume 56, Franklin County" compiled by Pauline Jones Gandrud, page 86:

"From Dropped Stitches in Southern History published in Memphis Commercial
Appeal . . . R.P.S., Russellville, Ala. sent the following information in answer
to a query concerning

TEMPLE SARGENT: "Temple SARGENT was my great grandfather. He was born in Caswell
Co., North Carolina on December 2, 1781. He served in the Legislature of Alabama several terms and was called back by the Governor after his term of office had expired. He was one of the trustees and deacons of old Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church. His first Wife was Maj. RUSSELL's daughter, Mollie, and by this union there were two children, Dorothy Ann and Oran SARGENTt. Major RUSSELL settled Russell's Valley and the Town of Russellville is named for him. Temple SARGENT has a number of great grandchildren who live in and round Russellville. His second wife was Louisa W. LESTER. He died August 15, 1850 and was buried four miles east of Russellville."

Robert L. James' History of Franklin Co., Ala gives tombstone inscription as
follows: Sacred to the memory of TEMPLE SARGENT. He was born in Caswell County, N.C. on the 2nd day of December 1781, departed this life the 18th day of August, 1850. He was a member and Deacon of the Baptist Church for many years.

A daughter of Temple SARGENT married Cordy SKINNER, one time Probate Judge of Franklin Co. Oran Sargent married Miss Mary Ann GHOLSON, daughter of Francis GHOLSON, who came from Botetourt Co, VA. *(Temple SARGENT b. N.C., moved (from Fkn Co., Tenn. KPJ) to Territory of Ala. near Russellville; Son Owen SARGENT b. there 1790 d. 1865; Son Harvey G. SARGENT b. 1838 d. 1904 m. Rebecca B. HARRIS
1838-1913, d. Benj. HARRIS, b. near Morristown, Tenn., War of 1812, New Orleans, Horseshoe Bend m. Nancy BRIGHAM, a native of Boston.)"
