QRYTEXT: Franklin County, Alabama was settled by
the soldiers who fought the War of 1812. The last battle that was fought
was the Battle of New Orleans. General Andrew Jackson was the commander
in chief and he drew many people to him to defend our country. After the
battle was over, the soldiers started back home afoot. Many of them
passed through Northwest Alabama and noted that the bottom lands along
the Tennessee River would make good cotton lands and the river provided
transportation. The land still belonged to the Indians and was not
available to settlers. They vowed however, to return when the land was
opened. We still do not have all the names of the soldiers who returned
but military records, bounty land records, and pension records, all in
the National Archives have yielded the following 29 names:
Hugh Barton, John Bell, Washington Brown, Thomas Chiles, Hance Corsby,
Abner Dickson, Hugh Dickson,William Downs, John Sanford Doxey, Mark
Elledge, Josiah Hall, Benjamin Harris, John Holland, Thomas Hughes, Joab
Watson Kirkland, John McGill, Samuel Meredith, William Moore, Benjamin
Pearsall, George Russell, John A. Russell, Lewis Russell, William
Russell,Sr., William Russell, Jr., Enoch Sparks, William Sparks, Joel C.
Tubbs, and Claiborne Williams. Some of these men did not stay here but
were here long enough to leave a record.

William Alfred GOTCHER Sr (b. abt 1772 in TN) moved with his wife Mary
BROYLES to the county in abt 1816. He may have died there. One family
tale has him as a constable or peace officer. Mary moved to MO with her
son.
William Alfred GOTCHER Jr. (b. 1806 in TN) and his wife Mary Pollie
HAVENS were married about 1826 in the county. By 1840 they had moved to
Clay CO, MO. (This is my direct line.)
James D. GOTCHER (b. abt. 1796 in NC?) and his wife Jemima are listed on
the 1850 census for the county, but moved to Colbert CO by 1864.
Any assistance on these families will be greatly appreciated.

Colonel Richard Mann whose plantation (existing until the 1870's) spilled
across the Alabama-Mississippi state line and involved four counties,
Tishomingo and Alcorn counties of Mississippi, and Franklin and Colvert
counties of Alabama. A common landmark on his property was Mann Chapel.
There exists now a Mann Chapel Lane near that site in extreme NW Alabama.
Of particular concern is the burial place of Colonel Richard Mann who

family. My great great grandfather was ISAAC NEWTON MORGAN, b. 1856 in
Sheffield, Alabama. He married MARGARET M. GREEN in 1881. Both Isaac
Morgan and the Green family were ennumerated in the Colbert county, AL
census for 1880.
Isaac and Margaret Morgan moved to Arkansas, then on to Oklahoma around
1892. A few years later he traveled back to Alabama to reconnect with his
brothers, but was told that all of them had scattered across the country.
According to the family, Isaac Morgan had at least 10 known brothers, and
he lost touch with ALL of them in the 1890's when he and his family went
off to Oklahoma.

married 2nd time to Julia Ann Moore McMickens (born 9 December 1876, died

October 1937 - buried at Graham Cemetery) George worked in mines and had
2 brothers - Oscar Allen (wife Laura) and Will Allen (wife Katie).
George's father was Dave Allen. Julia had 2 brothers - Carrol Moore and
Amos Moore (wife Molly). I do not have any other family member names. He
lived in Lawrence County Alabama for a number of years. Benton had 3
bothers Zoed Allen (Hillsboro); Horace Allen (Hillsboro); and Henry Allen
(Moulton) and 1 sister Josie Terry (Courtland). Any information on

Looking for Mother's Family - Katie Frank Terry Allen - (born in Lawrence
County - Southpike (4 miles from Courtland) - 16 June 1912. Died 05
March 1999 in Morgan County. Her father was Fed (Fred Terry - born in
Lawrence County (Southpike) 24 January 1895; Killed by convict in
Steamboat Springs, Colorado 14 October 1959. Fed married Lucy (Lucian)
Jane Dotson Born in St.Joseph, TN in 1909. Fed's father was Joe Betts
Terry - Born in Courtland AL in 1862 - he is buried at the Moulton
Cemetery (married Lizzy Moore Terry - Born in Butts County, GA in 1863).
Joe Betts Terry was married three (3) times - Lizzy Moore;
Alice; and Lucy Little - I do not have any information on Alice or Lucy
Little. Joe Betts Terry's mother was Betsy Terry - Born in Lawrence
County in 1842 - buried in Old Bethel Cemetery. Betsy Terry's father was
Steve Terry - buried at
Old Liberty Cemetery. Katie had 2 sisters - Louise Brock (Moulton) and

Dawes who married Tirey Jackson about 1829 in Hall county Ga. They were
from South Carolina and moved to Ga. It is said that Susanna was Cherokee
Indian and Tirey stole her from an Indian tribe and married her when she

John Vaden with wife Safronia in the 1860 Franklin Co. census.

In 1870 they were in Colbert Co. census. I have an idea they didn't move,
it was cause Colbert Co. was created between the 1860 & 1870 census. Then
where they lived in Franklin Co., became Colbert Co.
By 1880 Mary (Safronia or Safrona) was in Lauderdale Co., Tennessee with
the children, but John is no longer in the household. 1900 Safrona is
living in Haywood Co., Tennessee with Thomas J. Vaden and family. Census
say Safrona is a cousin to Thomas. She is a widow, married 12 years.
I am not sure if I have found Thomas in past census. Says he was born in
Alabama. Can't find a Vaden Family in Alabama that works out to be
Thomas' family. If he was a cousin to Safronia, would have had to been a
cousin by marriage, I would thing, maybe? So Thomas would be a son of a
brother to John's dad.
Would appreciate any info on this family.

Jeremiah Warren was born 1776-1778 in Kentucky or Virginia (both states
occupied common territory at one time). He married Nancy [--?--] abt.
1823-1828. He moved to Franklin County, Alabama by 1825 where he raised
a family. He was listed on the 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 Alabama
Census, but not on the 1870 census. He was given a land grant in 1850's
for service in the War of 1812. This land is in south Colbert County.

Missouri.

He was committed to Bryce Hospital in 1937, and the name was spelled
Holman. According to your site, his tombstone carries the spelling
Holeman. His wife Elizabeth (Lizzie) died in Jefferson County AL a
couple of years later. The information for J. D. Hallman's death
certificate was given by a son named Wilson who could be contacted
through a Sol McBrayer or a Harley Prince, and census records show these
families to be neighbors. The information on the Hallmans often
contradicts other information on them. I know they were from GA. Their
oldest daughter Laura Rose married a Camp, and it is through this union
that produced my line. Any help on the Hallmans, or Camps in the Phil
Campbell area would be welcomed.

I am looking for parents of Isaac Walker, born 1850/65(?), and wife,
Henrietta Hutcheson Walker Oliver, born 1867. I think Isaac's father
may have been Andrew Jackson "Jack" Walker, and I think
Henrietta Hutcheson's parents may have been Newton Pickney &
Syntha Hutcheson, both of Franklin Co.,AL. Isaac & Henrietta had 5
children born in Russellville: Mollie E, born 1887; Sarah L, born 1889;
William "Will" A., born 1890 (my Grandfather); Daniel I.,born
1892; & Mattie B, born 1894. Mollie married Luther Whitlock (no
children); Sarah (sometimes called Annie) married Robert "Bob"
Burrows, her children/grandchildren/great grandchildren still live
in/around Russellville). I have found families of Mattie B. Walker Oliver
(she married John Oliver's nephew-Henry--John was her Stepfather). I
would truly like to find the parents of Isaac Walker & Henrietta
Hutcheson. I know that Henrietta had a sister named Cora, and brother
named Oscar M., nephew Oscar M,Jr. After Isaac died, Henrietta married a
JOHN OLIVER, and they had 3 children: LENNY/MAMIE OLIVER, born 1903/04;
FRED OLIVER, born 1905/06; and ARLIE/ARNET, born 1907/08. I would like
to also find the families of these that still live in/around
Russellville. Lennie had a daughter & son, Ruth Wilson Ewing &
Ralph Wilson. Sarah/Annie Walker had a daughter, Ophelia Burrows Scott,
whose daughter, ?? Scott, married a "Thompkins". They still

James O. Boyles who is in census in Franklin Co., AL 1850-1880 then not
in 1900. I am hoping he is the James O. Boyles that I find in Bradley
Co., TN in 1900. According to the 1900 TN census he was b. JUL 1838 in
AL and the 1838 year is consistent with the James Boyles' listings in
the other censuses in AL. The 1910 TN census says this is his second
marriage which is consistent with the ages when he was first married and
when his wife, Annie (in the 1900 and 1910 censuses), was first married.
So I am assuming there is a marriage in AL and the 1880 Franklin Co.
census shows him with a wife, Mary, who is age 21. HOWEVER . . . it also
shows him with a SON age 19! Entirely possible since he is 43, yet in
the 1870 census he is in his father's household with NO wife!
Do you have any information on this James O. Boyles? Is there a
tombstone for his wife, Mary, in Franklin Co.? An obituary maybe?
Any help would be appreciated!

James M. Hamilton, and in the cencus of 1900 he lived in Hardin County,
Tenneessee, vicinity of Shiloh. He listed his birthplace as Alabama.
Going back to the cencus of 1880, there were two James M. Hamiltons, of
the correct age (that would be 28 years old in 1880). One was in the
family of E.J. Hamilton of Loundes County, Al. The other is in the
family of James Hamilton of Franklin County, Al. The family information
from the cencus is:
Father James Hamilton, aged 61 born in TN, a farmer
Mother Cynthia Hamilton, aged 57 born in Ireland
Dau Matilda, aged 40 born in Al
Dau Mahala, aged 36 born in Al
Son James M. aged 28 born in Al
Dau Laura, aged 27 born in Al
I'm trying to determine if the James M. listed here moved later to
Tennessee and was my great grandfather, or the James M. from Loundes
county is the one. It would be appreciated if you could aid me in
determining wheather this James moved to TN.

show an S.M. Davis and Mary M. Davis with a son James E., and the 1880
Fed Census show a Sam Davis and a Mary M. Davis with a son James E.

Wife (spouse) may have 1st name Louisa.
By 1879, John Tyler and spouse are living in Bolivar County, MS, where
1st child is born.
Family: John Lovinggood, with wife Priscella, lived in Franklin County
near Buzzard Roost for a number of years between 1850 and 1890 (per
'60, '70, and '80 Census records). John Tyler was one of
several children.
