Death of Mrs. M.S. Angle

Friday afternoon, the sad announcement was made that Mrs. M.A. Angle had died unexpectedly at her home on Church Street after an illness of only a few days.  Her illness had not been of a serious nature, until Thursday afternoon, when pneumonia developed and proved fatal in a very short time.  During the week preceding her death, but there was no symptoms of the fatal malady, until its appearance Thursday afternoon.  From this time she grew rapidly worse until death came.  Members of the family were Hasty summoned and her Daughter Mrs. Wilks arrived in time to see her mother before the end came.

The death of Mrs. Angle removes one of the oldest citizens of Lee County.  Coming here about thirty-five years ago she, with her husband and family settled near Bryce's Cross Roads, afterwards moving to Baldwyn and then to Tupelo.  Mrs. Angle was born in Fayette Court House, Alabama and was married to Thomas Angle on September 16th, 1858, she was the mother of eight children, only two survive, Mrs. Wilks and Joseph Angle of Tupelo.  In her early childhood she joined the Baptist Church, remaining a faithful and consistent member to the time of her death.  In a relations of life, she was true and had the highest conceptions of her duty, as a Christian wife, mother, and friend.  Kind, Affectionate, generious, and considerate of others, she exerted an influence for good that will live as a monument to her memory in coming years.  To her family she was devoted and no sacrifice was too great when their comfort or interest was at stake.  In her death the community has sustained a loss that will be hard to fill; she was known by everybody and was loved and honored for her Christian virtues.  She was buried from the Baptist Church Saturday afternoon, the services being conducted by her pastor, Rev. R.A. Kimbrough.  A large concourse of friends were present to pay the last tribute of respect.  Her remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at this place.  To the bereaved family we extend deepest sympathy in their great sorrow.  (Src: Tupelo Journal (Weekly) Newspaper, November 03, 1905 – May 10, 1907.  Microfilm number 1138.  MS Department of Archives and History, Jackson, MS)

Thomas Angle
Died, at his home on Church Street, at an early hour Thursday morning, Thomas Angle aged 77 years.

For more than a year Mr. Angle was the victim of an insidious disease that failed to yield to skillful treatment and as it progressed his sufferings grew more and more intense and the end brought sweet relief.  His days of affliction were brightened by the devotion and constant attention of his wife and the attention and sympathy of his friends.

Mr. Angle was a native of Alabama and there grew to manhood.  At the first call for volunteers in the Civil War, he enlisted in an Alabama regiment and served the four years of that terrible conflict.  At the close of the war he came to Mississippi and settled at Baldwyn, where he held a position with the Mobile & Ohio Railroad Company.  From Baldwyn he moved to Tupelo more than 30 years ago and has made his home here ever since.  In business matters, Mr. Angle displayed sound judgement and was recognized as one of the city's most substantial and reliable citizens.  He was a quiet, unostentatious man and his life was marked by charity and sympathy for his fellow-man.

Deceased leaves a wife and one daughter, Mrs. J.T. Wilkes, of Jackson, Tennessee, one son and a number of grandchildren to mourn his loss.

The funeral; services were conducted Tuesday Morning from the residence on Church Street, where a number of friends gathered to pay their last tribute of respect.  Rev. Geo. P. Scott, paster of the Presbyterian Church, conducted the services.

The bereaved family have the sympathy of all in their sorrow.  (Src: Tupelo Journal (Weekly) Newspaper, November 07, 1913 – February 18, 1916.  Mircofilm roll number 1143.  123-9.  Missing issues.  MS Department of Archives and History, Jackson, MS)
