~ Smith Store: Accounts Ledger ~
(1920s/1930s)

Graciously contributed by
Karen Melton Manasco

These are names of customers at the store owned and operated by my grandfather, W.D. “Dilmus” SMITH, in the late 1920s and early 1930s.  The store was located on Hwy. 43, south of Winfield near the Bobo community.  Written beside each customer's name were the items bought on credit, the total cost, the amount paid and the amount still owed.

Grandfather accepted all kinds and manner of payment from his customers.  Since he also owned a farm, some people would help him in the fields.  A few examples cited in the ledger include cutting hay and oats, picking peas, picking cotton, pulling corn, hoeing in the garden, splitting wood, pulling fodder?, helping clean house and doing the wash.  Some customers even brought him chickens and eggs!

The numbers in the first column below reflect the order in which the names were recorded in the ledger.
