Pleasant C. SPEARS was born in January 1845 in Jefferson Co., AL, to James P. SPEARS (SPEER) and Elizabeth Jane HARDEN.  Within the next five years, the family resettled to Fayette County.  They appear there on the 1850 U.S. census with James as head of house.  He is supposed to be the same James SPEAR (sic), who claimed more than 300 acres of federal land about three miles north of Studdards Crossroads in 1858/1859.  James died apparently before the next census of 1860, which lists "Jane" as head of house.  By 1870, the family had moved north to Franklin Co., AL.

In February1863, at the age of 18 years, Pleasant enlisted in the 2nd Alabama Cavalry, U.S.A.  He was discharged in December 1863, then reenlisted in the 1st Mississippi Mounted Rifles, U.S.A., on January 1, 1864.  In January 1865, he was wounded in the lower left abdomen.  The rifle ball struck and fractured his hip, but the surgery to repair his injury did a great deal more damage. 

P.C. SPEARS left Franklin County in the early 1870s.  He established himself in Conway Co., AR, where he married Harriet BRUCE in April 1874.  Several of his siblings relocated to Arkansas at this same time.

Pleasant C. SPEARS died in January 1888 and was buried on his homestead in Conway County.
