POWELL, E.A. ~ Owned land in Fayette County, 1831. According to great-grandaughter, Mary Powell Slimer of Little Rock, AR, in a letter dated 20 Aug 1974: "To my knowledge the POWELLs were never in Newtonville - at least E.A. Powell wasn't. I would appreciate a correction being made in the latest issue to be published around 15 Sept and proper credit given for the Powells in Fayette - not Newtonville. Sarah POWELL's grave is the only one I have located in this area. This is in the old Zion Cemetery 4 miles north of Bankston. Family records state that Reuben and at least 3 sons were buried on the "homeplace" on the west bank of the Luxapililla."

STILLMAN, George Thomas ~ Born: 1841, Fayette County. Enlisted in 41st Alabama Regt., C.S.A. Fought at Stones River, Chickamauga and in Virginia in 1864. Was a sergeant when shot in the chest at Petersburg, VA, 19 Sep 1864. [3]
STILLMAN, John Bunyan ~ Born: 1845. Buried: Stillman Family Cemetery, east of Covin, AL. Enlisted as private in 56th Alabama Cavalry, Co. I, C.S.A., 1 Sept 1863, Fayette, AL; served until close of war, 1865. Was receiving pension for his Confederate military service in 1894.
STILLMAN, Joseph William ~ Born: 1836, Fayette County. Enlisted in 56th Partisan Rangers; served as sergeant. Also served in 13th Alabama Regt., C.S.A., until close of war, 1865. [3]
STILLMAN, Sarah Hasseltine ~ Born: 1837. Buried: Old Rocky Mount Cemetery, east of Covin, AL. Married (1) Mr. CROW. Married (2) Rev. David ANDREWS (b. 15 Jun 1831; d. 2 Dec 1887, Fayette County).
STILLMAN, Thomas ~ Farmer & father of 10 children (including Benjamin M., George T., John B. and Joseph W. STILLMAN – see above). His parents came to U.S. from England, circa 1800. They had a child to die while coming over, and it was buried at sea. His mother's maiden name was LOVE. [3]

STOREY, Henry ~ Born: 1758, South Carolina. Died: 1836, Greene Co., AL. Served as sergeant in South Carolina militia during Revolutionary War. Placed on pension rolls in Fayette County in 1831, when he was about 77 years of age. His annual allowance was $120.

STRONG, Johnson ~ Served in Virginia militia during Revolutionary War. His rank was "artificier," which could mean mechanic, carpenter, veterinarian or blacksmith. Drew pension of $33 annually as resident of Fayette County in 1840, when he was aged 82. He applied for pension increase but was denied because his services were not military.

Wounded at Malvern Hill on 1 Jul 1862 and sent home on furlough; promoted to Capt. while on furlough, 11 Aug 1862; assumed command of Company D when he returned, 31 Mar 1863. TREADAWAY, Francis Marion "Fill" ~ Born: 16 Sep 1833, Meddard Branch, Union District, NC. Died: 3 May 1913, Carbon Hill, Walker Co., AL; buried Pisgah Cemetery, Carbon Hill, AL. Enlisted in 26th Alabama Infantry, Co. C, C.S.A., as 3rd Sgt. in 1861; promoted to 2nd Lt. in 1862. Commanded company at South Mountain, at Chancellorsville (1863, wounded and sent to hospital) and at Battle of Ezra Church (1864, wounded and furloughed home). Sheriff of Fayette County, reportedly as early as 1865; in 1869-1870, he successfully put down a Ku Klux Klan reign of terror. First man to be embalmed in Carbon Hill. Married Sarah M. NEAL(E), 4 Jul 1869, Fayette County. [6]

VAN HOOSE, Jesse ~ Born: 1788, Montgomery Co., NC. Died: 1852, Northport, Tuscaloosa Co., AL. Appointed County Court Judge, 1824. Senator, 1825. Postmaster, 1826-1841 (received total salary of $324.02 for these 15 years). Trustee of "Fayetteville Male and Female Academy," 1838. Was the second white man to come into this area. He came in from Franklin County to trade with the Indians. He soon moved to Tuscaloosa where he became trustee of University of Alabama, circa 1841. Father of George Woolsey, James Alexander, Alfred Eggleston and Valentine C. VAN HOOSE (VANHOOSE).

Lived at Dublin P.O. near New River Baptist Church, 1857. Married Nancy SMITH. Two of their sons (Benjamin and James M. WAKEFIELD) served in the C.S. army and a third son (Thomas L. WAKEFIELD) joined the U.S. army.

Representative, 1835-1836. Resigned his county judgeship to became Justice of the Peace (Town Beat) in 1837 because it was "far more lucrative." Senator, 1827-1841. Justice of the Peace, 1862. Probate Judge, 1868-1874.
WILSON, James ~ Served as colonel of regiment of militia that embraced the entire county. Defeated for House seat, 1833. He soon moved to Mississippi and lived "to a great age."
