Child of John H. Davis and Virginia A. -----:

xi  Jessie Glen DAVIS (f) b. 11 Nov 1875, Lauderdale Co., MS.

NOTE: In a letter written in 1923, Charles H. DAVIS (#9/x above) stated: "I remember hearing my father say that his father moved from Maryland [?] to Giles Co. [Tennessee] on the Cumberland River, where he, John 2nd, was born.  John H. D. married Nancy GORE* near Jonesboro, Ala.  They then moved to Fayette Co. where they reared a family of ten children.  John H. DAVIS' home was 4½ miles north of the Fayette Court house.  There was a strong tie of affection between all the DAVIS families."  Additional information that may or may not be attributable to Charles H. DAVIS states that John Hawkins DAVIS was a Methodist circuit rider and raised fine mules.  Also, "Nancy Gore DAVIS was a practicing physician, making her rounds on horseback" [1].

John H. DAVIS was recorded on the 1830 U.S. census of Fayette County with his wife and firstborn son (p. 213).  In August 1838, he received a land patent from the federal government for 40 acres identified as the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter (NWSW) of Section 15, Township 15 South, Range 12 West [2].  This property adjoined land patented to his brother, Alvis DAVIS, near what is now the village of Lawrence Mill (see map of area here).  John was enumerated beside his brother James on the 1840 census (p. 25).

The DAVIS family was complete by the 1850 U.S. census, which lists John as a farmer with real property worth $500 (p. 93a).  He claimed to be a minister for the Methodist Episcopal church on the 1860 census, valuing his real estate at $500 and other property at $600 (p. 447).

As disagreements between northern and southern states escalated, Alabama seceded from the Union in 1861.  John's two oldest sons joined the Confederate army.  John Jr. enlisted in Capt. Dave BRYAN's Co. I, 26th Alabama Infantry.  "His mother, Nancy Gore DAVIS, was listening to [a] letter received by a neighbor when the message was read that among the killed was John H. DAVIS.  She fell in a faint and was carried to her bed from which she never arose" [1].  She died just two years after the war ended and rests reportedly in an unmarked grave at the Hopewell cemetery.  It is interesting to speculate why a Methodist minister's wife was buried in what is now regarded as a Primitive Baptist cemetery.  Further research of the cemetery's history may yield additional clues.

John H. DAVIS has not yet been located on the 1870 census, but some suspect that he was the man of this name who married Alva M. PATTERSON, 11 Oct 1870 in Fayette County.  If so, the marriage did not last long.  John later moved west to Mississippi and married Virginia A. BOYD, an apparent widow whose maiden name may have been GLASCOCK [3].  She and her husband, Lewis M. BOYD, were recorded on the 1870 census of Lauderdale Co., MS, in Twp. 7, Marion Station P.O. (p. 85).  Two of John's daughters and their husbands lived nearby, which accounts for John's eventual exodus from Alabama.

The venerable John Hawkins DAVIS was ready, willing and able to start a new family with his younger wife, but he died before the birth of their first child in 1875.  The following obituary was found in the records of the Mississippi Methodist Conference: "Rev. John H. DAVIS, father of Mrs. John C. BROGAN, of the Mississippi Conference, died at Marion on May 9, aged 68.  Born in Tennessee, he spent the most of his life in Fayette county, Alabama" [4].  It is presumed that he was buried in Lauderdale Co., MS.

* Although Charles H. DAVIS appears to have indicated that his mother's maiden name was GORE, other researchers maintain that she was Nancy Gore FRANKLIN, a suspected daughter of Owen FRANKLIN and Nancy GORE of Hopkins Co., KY, and Jefferson Co., AL.   She also was listed as Nancy FRANKLIN on her daughter's (Urilda) death certificate in 1928.

iv
Nancy E. DAVIS b. ca 1861, Fayette Co., AL.
NOTE: Thomas and Sarah DAVIS were recorded in Fayette County on the 1850 U.S.census (p. 95b).  Between June 1858 and July 1860, Thomas received six federal land patents for more than 240 acres in Sec. 8, Twp. 15S, Range 12W — about 1.5 miles northwest of his parents' homestead [2].  These adjoining tracts bordered lands patented to brothers-in-law Humphrey DICKINSON to the north and Peyton DICKINSON to the south.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Thomas enlisted in
Capt. John M. BILLUPS's 43rd Mississippi Infantry, Co. B, CSA [5].  According to tradition, "He came home on parole to the bedside of his wife, who was thought to be dying.  She recovered but he took sick from the exposure and died" [1].  Another source states that "Private Thomas L. Davis [was] captured [at] Vicksburg [in July 1863]; died awaiting exchange 9/11/63 Fayette Co., AL" [5].  His widow and children were recorded in Twp. 15, Range 12, on the 1870 U.S. census of Fayette County (p. 404).

Sarah DAVIS submitted a "Widow's Application for Relief" to the U.S. government 06 May 1897.  Alabama Confederate pension records show that her first application for "relief" was made in June 1887.  She signed these documents with her mark, indicating that she was unable to read or write.

Grandview Cemetery.  Bessie died 17 Sep 1968, Alvarado, Johnson Co., TX, bur. Grandview Cemetery.
NOTE: Nancy DAVIS was married shortly after the 1850 census and settled with her husband about a mile west of present-day Lawrence Mill.  Patents issued in June 1858 and July 1860 show that Payton J. (sic) DICKINSON acquired approximately 280 acres of federal land in sections 8 and 17 of Twp. 15S, Range 12W [2].  The property adjoined lands that were patented to Nancy's brother Thomas during the same time period.

Peyton DICKINSON enlisted in the 13th Battalion, Alabama Partisan Rangers, Co. E, CSA, 07 Apr 1863 at Fayette Court House.  A few months later, the battalion was reorganized into the 56th Regiment, Alabama Partisan Rangers [8].  "[T]he 56th operated in north Mississippi for some time under Gen'l Daniel RUGGLES.  It was there brigaded under Gen'l Samuel W. FERGUSON and sent to north Georgia.  It served on the flank of the army during the Dalton-Atlanta campaign, and it saw arduous duty.  The regiment moved with Gen'l John Bell HOOD to the Tennessee, then it turned and harassed Union Gen'l William T. SHERMAN.  It was in the trenches of Savannah and operated near Augusta.  It moved into the Carolinas and was surrendered at Greensboro, 26 April 1865, about 150 strong."[9]

The family was recorded in Twp. 15 on the U.S. censuses of 1870 (p. 402) and 1880 (p. 469).  Peyton DICKINSON died soon after the latter enumeration and was buried in the Hopwell cemetery.  By 1900, his widow and several of his children had settled in Hill Co., TX (p. 159).  They resided probably between Itasca (Hill County) and Grandview in neighboring Johnson County, where Nancy DAVIS died in 1911 at the age of 80.

4.
Mary Elizabeth DAVIS b. 06 Aug 1834, Fayette Co., AL, m. 1856, in Fayette Co., AL, Humphrey W. DICKINSON, b. ca 1836, AL.  Mary died (after 1860), (Fayette Co., AL) [1].

Children of Mary E. Davis and Humphrey W. Dickinson (included):
i  William DICKINSON b. ca 1857, Fayette Co., AL.
NOTE: Humphrey DICKINSON is presumed to be a brother to Peyton DICKINSON (see #3 above).  Soon after he and Mary DAVIS were married, the couple settled about two miles northwest of the DAVIS farm in Fayette County.  In 1859 and 1860, Humphrey received federal land patents for 360 acres in sections 5, 6 and 8 of Twp. 15W, Range 12W [2].  This is the same area and time that Mary's brother Thomas acquired similar land patents.  The family was recorded on the 1860 U.S. census of Fayette County with real property valued at $1,000 and other property worth $600 (p. 468).  Humphrey DICKINSON later served in the 41st Alabama Infantry, Co. I, CSA [10].  The family then disappeared from the records, and nothing more is known of them.

vii
Charlie M. BROGAN (f) b. ca 1876, MS.
viii
Allie C. BROGAN (f) b. Dec 1879, Wayne Co., MS, d. (after June 1900), (Lauderdale Co., MS).
NOTE: Martha and John BROGAN apparently lived on the DAVIS farm in Fayette County after their marriage.  The two families were recorded side by side on the 1860 U.S. census, but the BROGANs claimed to own no real property (p. 447).  Both Martha's husband and father were listed as ministers of the Methodist Episcopal church.  In fact, Rev. BROGAN performed the marriages of at least two of Martha's siblings: Margaret's in 1866 and Urilda's in 1868.

John BROGAN's calling led the family west in 1870.  That year's census finds them living in Lauderdale Co., MS, Twp. 7, Marion Station P.O. (p. 87).  They later moved north into Kemper County, where John helped establish the Chapel Hill church: "This church was founded in 1874.  The first building was constructed from hewn logs.  The benches were also made from larger logs that were split in halves and hewed to a smoother surface.  This building was completed in 1875 and was known as Narkeeta Chapel.  The first minister was the Rev. John C. BROGAN, an itinerant Methodist minister from Lauderdale [County]" [11].

The BROGANs settled in Wayne Co., MS, before the 1880 U.S. census (p. 329) and later moved to Jasper County.  They were living in Rose Hill at the time of John's death: "John Cornelius BROGAN was born in County Clare, Ireland, June 24, 1823.  He was of a Roman Catholic family and brought up in that faith, and was a clerk in a Roman Catholic Church from the age of ten.  An apt young man, he was educated for the priesthood, but never filled that office.  On January 2, 1848, he sailed for America, and for a time was employed in the New Orleans customhouse.  In 1850, he settled in Fayette County, Alabama, and was employed by a Mrs. STUART, who so impressed him that he attended a Protestant church, and began to read the Bible and was a diligent student of it, eagerly reading it through. / In April 1853, he was converted and joined the church under Rev. S.H. COX, of the Alabama [Methodist] Conference.  In November 1856, he was licensed to exhort, and in May 1857, he was licensed to preach.  In 1858, he was admitted on trial into the Alabama Conference, at Macon, and appointed to [the] Jasper circuit.  The next year he was on the Columbus circuit as Junior preacher, at the close of which year he located. / He was ordained deacon by Bishop ANDREW at Montgomery in 1860 and elder by the same Bishop in 1864.  He married Miss Mattie L. DAVIS, daughter of Rev. John H. DAVIS, of Fayette County, Alabama, on May 17, 1854, and to them were born ten children, eight of them and the mother surviving him. / In 1866, he was readmitted into the Alabama Conference and served till 1870 when he was transferred to the Mississippi Conference together with that part of Mississippi then in the Alabama Conference, and served 17 years in Lauderdale, Neshoba, Clarke, Wayne, and Jasper counties.  He died at Rose Hill in Jasper county on January 12, 1888, being pastor of the Paulding circuit" [4].

Although one source states that Martha DAVIS died in 1893 in Vicksburg [1], Mississippi Methodist Conference records establish Vossburg as her place of death: "Mrs. M.L. BROGAN, widow of Rev. John C. BROGAN, died at Vossburg on September 23, 1893, aged 56.  The daughter of Rev. John H. DAVIS, she was born in Fayette county, Alabama, on November 2, 1837 [sic], and married on May 17, 1854" [4].  More research is needed to construct the genealogy of this family.

viii
E.O. HOLLAND (m) b. ca 1879, Meridian, MS.
NOTE: William HOLLAND was a shoemaker by trade, but he was able to acquire from the federal government more than 200 acres in Fayette County in July 1860 [2].  This property was located in Sec. 7, Twp. 15S, Range 12W, about two miles west of what is now Lawrence Mill.  Sarah DAVIS's brother Thomas and two brothers-in-law — Peyton and Humphrey DICKINSON — owned several hundreds of acres of federal land in adjoining sections 5, 8 and 17.

The family was recorded in Fayette County on the 1860 U.S. census with $1,000 of real property and $1,500 of personal property (p. 460).  William would seem to have been a prime recruit for the Confederate army, and several William T. HOLLANDs are listed in the extant Alabama muster records; however, the exact unit in which he served (if he did) is not yet known.

The HOLLANDs and BROGANs (see #5) appear to have moved together to Lauderdale Co., MS, in 1870.  Both families were recorded in Twp. 7, Marion Station P.O., on that year's census (pp. 86 & 87, respectively).  By the next census of 1880, the HOLLANDs had settled in Meridian, MS (p. 56).  Sarah DAVIS died 5 years later, presumably in Meridian, where at least one of her children was living in 1900.  More research is needed to construct the genealogy of this family.

viii
James A. WIMBERLY b. Dec 1886, Williamson Co., TX.
NOTE: Margaret DAVIS and Thomas WIMBERLY were married in Fayette County in 1866.  From that time until their deaths, they have been found on the following U.S. censuses: 1880 in Williamson Co., TX (p. 518), 1900 in Runnels Co., TX (p. 29), and 1910 in Taylor Co., TX (p. 200).  The latter enumeration indicates that seven of Margaret's nine children were still living.  Confederate pension records offer additional insight into their lives and movements.

Thomas J. WIMBERLY enlisted 11 Jun 1861 at Fayette C.H. in the 11th Alabama Infantry, Co. I, CSA.  While serving in this regiment in the fall of 1864, he was shot and wounded in the ankle.  He then joined General RODDEY's command (5th Alabama Cavalry) and continued service until the surrender.  Thomas was living at Wingate, Runnels Co., TX, in August 1908, when he applied for a Confederate pension [13].  He claimed to be in "bad" physical condition, suffering from serious kidney and bladder trouble and rheumatism in his injured leg.  He was getting too old, he said, to do hard work, which was the only kind of work he knew.  Also included in the pension file were depositions of several witnesses.  P.W. THORNTON of Abilene, TX, stated that he and Thomas "entered the army at the same time in the same company and regiment and served together during the war."  Dr. A.S. LOVE of Runnels County detailed Thomas's physical debilities, including obesity, stating: "From the life he has lived, he looks to be much older than he really is."

Within weeks of Thomas's death, Margaret WIMBERLY filed for a widow's pension [14].  Her application reveals that the family moved to Texas in 1872 and had lived in Runnels County since 1898.  Margaret was added to the pension rolls in March 1914 but died just four years later.  Mrs. J.H. LEWIS of Winters, TX, notified the pension board of her mother's death in 1918 and attached a copy of the death certificate.  Mrs. LEWIS also applied for a Mortuary Warrant to help pay the funeral expenses.  From these two documents, we learn that Margaret DAVIS died of "euremic poison" (Bright's Disease) at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.W. FOWLER, and was buried at Wingate.  Additional information is needed on this family.

(p. 317).

In August 1894, John WOFFORD received a land patent from the federal government for 40 acres in Lamar County [2].  This property, identified as the NENW quarter of Sec. 31, Twp. 14S, Range 15W, was located a few miles north of Vernon (see map of area here).

NOTE: Charles DAVIS was recorded "next door" to his former (and future) in-laws on the 1870 U.S. census of Fayette County (p. 405).  At this time, he claimed to be a farmer in Twp. 15S, Range 12W, with only personal property worth $150.  He married his late wife's younger sister the following year.  By the 1880 census, the family had moved west to neighboring Lamar County (p. 604).  The 1900 census shows them living in Millport, Lamar County (p. 115).

Like his father before him, Charles answered the call to preach, presumably as an elder in the Primitive Baptist church.  This is confirmed by the 1900 census as well as several Lamar County marriage records listing C.H. DAVIS as presiding minister.  Charles and Victoria were living with their daughter Maggie in Henry, Pickens Co., AL, at the 1920 U.S. census (p. 32).  He returned to Vernon before his death in 1923 [1].
