NOTE: Nancy DAVIS was married shortly after the 1850 census and settled with her husband about a mile west of present-day Lawrence Mill.  Patents issued in June 1858 and July 1860 show that Payton J. (sic) DICKINSON acquired approximately 280 acres of federal land in sections 8 and 17 of Twp. 15S, Range 12W [2].  The property adjoined lands that were patented to Nancy's brother Thomas during the same time period.

Peyton DICKINSON enlisted in the 13th Battalion, Alabama Partisan Rangers, Co. E, CSA, 07 Apr 1863 at Fayette Court House.  A few months later, the battalion was reorganized into the 56th Regiment, Alabama Partisan Rangers [8].  "[T]he 56th operated in north Mississippi for some time under Gen'l Daniel RUGGLES.  It was there brigaded under Gen'l Samuel W. FERGUSON and sent to north Georgia.  It served on the flank of the army during the Dalton-Atlanta campaign, and it saw arduous duty.  The regiment moved with Gen'l John Bell HOOD to the Tennessee, then it turned and harassed Union Gen'l William T. SHERMAN.  It was in the trenches of Savannah and operated near Augusta.  It moved into the Carolinas and was surrendered at Greensboro, 26 April 1865, about 150 strong."[9]

The family was recorded in Twp. 15 on the U.S. censuses of 1870 (p. 402) and 1880 (p. 469).  Peyton DICKINSON died soon after the latter enumeration and was buried in the Hopwell cemetery.  By 1900, his widow and several of his children had settled in Hill Co., TX (p. 159).  They resided probably between Itasca (Hill County) and Grandview in neighboring Johnson County, where Nancy DAVIS died in 1911 at the age of 80.

NOTE: Martha and John BROGAN apparently lived on the DAVIS farm in Fayette County after their marriage.  The two families were recorded side by side on the 1860 U.S. census, but the BROGANs claimed to own no real property (p. 447).  Both Martha's husband and father were listed as ministers of the Methodist Episcopal church.  In fact, Rev. BROGAN performed the marriages of at least two of Martha's siblings: Margaret's in 1866 and Urilda's in 1868.

John BROGAN's calling led the family west in 1870.  That year's census finds them living in Lauderdale Co., MS, Twp. 7, Marion Station P.O. (p. 87).  They later moved north into Kemper County, where John helped establish the Chapel Hill church: "This church was founded in 1874.  The first building was constructed from hewn logs.  The benches were also made from larger logs that were split in halves and hewed to a smoother surface.  This building was completed in 1875 and was known as Narkeeta Chapel.  The first minister was the Rev. John C. BROGAN, an itinerant Methodist minister from Lauderdale [County]" [11].

The BROGANs settled in Wayne Co., MS, before the 1880 U.S. census (p. 329) and later moved to Jasper County.  They were living in Rose Hill at the time of John's death: "John Cornelius BROGAN was born in County Clare, Ireland, June 24, 1823.  He was of a Roman Catholic family and brought up in that faith, and was a clerk in a Roman Catholic Church from the age of ten.  An apt young man, he was educated for the priesthood, but never filled that office.  On January 2, 1848, he sailed for America, and for a time was employed in the New Orleans customhouse.  In 1850, he settled in Fayette County, Alabama, and was employed by a Mrs. STUART, who so impressed him that he attended a Protestant church, and began to read the Bible and was a diligent student of it, eagerly reading it through. / In April 1853, he was converted and joined the church under Rev. S.H. COX, of the Alabama [Methodist] Conference.  In November 1856, he was licensed to exhort, and in May 1857, he was licensed to preach.  In 1858, he was admitted on trial into the Alabama Conference, at Macon, and appointed to [the] Jasper circuit.  The next year he was on the Columbus circuit as Junior preacher, at the close of which year he located. / He was ordained deacon by Bishop ANDREW at Montgomery in 1860 and elder by the same Bishop in 1864.  He married Miss Mattie L. DAVIS, daughter of Rev. John H. DAVIS, of Fayette County, Alabama, on May 17, 1854, and to them were born ten children, eight of them and the mother surviving him. / In 1866, he was readmitted into the Alabama Conference and served till 1870 when he was transferred to the Mississippi Conference together with that part of Mississippi then in the Alabama Conference, and served 17 years in Lauderdale, Neshoba, Clarke, Wayne, and Jasper counties.  He died at Rose Hill in Jasper county on January 12, 1888, being pastor of the Paulding circuit" [4].

Although one source states that Martha DAVIS died in 1893 in Vicksburg [1], Mississippi Methodist Conference records establish Vossburg as her place of death: "Mrs. M.L. BROGAN, widow of Rev. John C. BROGAN, died at Vossburg on September 23, 1893, aged 56.  The daughter of Rev. John H. DAVIS, she was born in Fayette county, Alabama, on November 2, 1837 [sic], and married on May 17, 1854" [4].  More research is needed to construct the genealogy of this family.

NOTE: William HOLLAND was a shoemaker by trade, but he was able to acquire from the federal government more than 200 acres in Fayette County in July 1860 [2].  This property was located in Sec. 7, Twp. 15S, Range 12W, about two miles west of what is now Lawrence Mill.  Sarah DAVIS's brother Thomas and two brothers-in-law — Peyton and Humphrey DICKINSON — owned several hundreds of acres of federal land in adjoining sections 5, 8 and 17.

The family was recorded in Fayette County on the 1860 U.S. census with $1,000 of real property and $1,500 of personal property (p. 460).  William would seem to have been a prime recruit for the Confederate army, and several William T. HOLLANDs are listed in the extant Alabama muster records; however, the exact unit in which he served (if he did) is not yet known.

The HOLLANDs and BROGANs (see #5) appear to have moved together to Lauderdale Co., MS, in 1870.  Both families were recorded in Twp. 7, Marion Station P.O., on that year's census (pp. 86 & 87, respectively).  By the next census of 1880, the HOLLANDs had settled in Meridian, MS (p. 56).  Sarah DAVIS died 5 years later, presumably in Meridian, where at least one of her children was living in 1900.  More research is needed to construct the genealogy of this family.

NOTE: John S. WOFFORD enlisted as a private in the 8th Alabama Cavalry, Co. B, CSA, in the summer of 1863 at Fayette Court House.  He continued service until being paroled at Meridian, MS, 17 May 1865 [17].  He and Urilda DAVIS were married in Fayette County in 1868 then moved west to neighboring Sanford (now Lamar) County.  The 1870 U.S. census of Sanford County shows the couple living with his parents in Precinct 12, Big Pond P.O. (p. 317). 

In August 1894, John WOFFORD received a land patent from the federal government for 40 acres in Lamar County [2].  This property, identified as the NENW quarter of Sec. 31, Twp. 14S, Range 15W, was located a few miles north of Vernon (see map of area here). 

NOTE: Charles DAVIS was recorded "next door" to his former (and future) in-laws on the 1870 U.S. census of Fayette County (p. 405).  At this time, he claimed to be a farmer in Twp. 15S, Range 12W, with only personal property worth $150.  He married his late wife's younger sister the following year.  By the 1880 census, the family had moved west to neighboring Lamar County (p. 604).  The 1900 census shows them living in Millport, Lamar County (p. 115). 

Like his father before him, Charles answered the call to preach, presumably as an elder in the Primitive Baptist church.  This is confirmed by the 1900 census as well as several Lamar County marriage records listing C.H. DAVIS as presiding minister.  Charles and Victoria were living with their daughter Maggie in Henry, Pickens Co., AL, at the 1920 U.S. census (p. 32).  He returned to Vernon before his death in 1923 [1].
