Mr. T. GALLOWAY and Mrs. Jane GALLOWAY
by Frances L. Brasher

The last resting place of Tom and Jane BEAL GALLOWAY is in Hollingsworth Family Cemetery, located at the foot of Ford's Mountain, Fayette Co., Ala.  These two old graves were discovered by accident [in 1976] as I was researching and listing the readable stones in the cemetery that had grown over with vines, trees and debris.  A friend commented, "Why don't they clean this area?" and I replied ... WE are THEY now.  Once it was kept by family and neighbors, but they too are dead.  So, the graves go un-tended, forgotten except for people like me looking for clues for genealogy recording.

I stumbled on the stones that were completely covered by leaves.  To my amazement as I brushed away the clutter from the crude markers, there was one more generation back in my family quest.  I was happily surprised.  These two graves are near that of their daughter, Zilpha.  Tom and Jane GALLOWAY were living in the household of this daughter and their son-in-law, John HOLLINGSWORTH in the 1850 Fayette Co., Alabama Census.  Tom was listed as being born in Pennsylvania and Jane was born in Maryland.  Zilpha GALLOWAY HOLLINGSWORTH was born June 30, 1809 in North Carolina, died April 13, 1894.  Her husband John was born September 3, 1792 and died November 30, 1880.  The length of his grave markers indicates he was a very tall man.  He fathered 23 children (two wives).  Tom and Jane's stones are crudely carved of native stone.  Inscribed as: Mr. T. GALLOWAY was b; Feb the 18 1773 / and died Jan the 30 1852; Mrs. Jane GALLOWAY was born Mar the 27, 1776 and died Dec the 31, 1851.  This shows their deaths were only one month apart.

Jane was the daughter of David BEAL and descended from Sir Arthur KIMSTON in Scotland.  According to Minutes [of the] Probate Court, Fayette County, Alabama, there were only daughters listed as heirs of Tom and Jane GALLOWAY ...
