Elmore County Queries 1997 - 1999

Re: Cousins and Johnstons
I am searching info on the Cousins and Johnston families. My earliest Cousin I have is a Green Cousin that married a Susan and had a son named Jeptha Green Cousins who married Margaret Jane Johnston. I was looking for Margaret Janes parents. Iknow she was born in Georgia and atleast her father was born in South Carolina and the mother was born in Georgia or South Carolina. I would appreciate any help also on Green Cousins parents. First I find him is in Baldwin County Georgia in 1820 then 1850 in Coosa County Alabama and he is buried in Eclectic Cemetary in Elmore County and his son Jeptha was living at Wetumpka and later moved to Independence County Arkansas where his daughter Ida married my great granpa James h. Altom. Any help would be appreciated.

searching for any information my grandfather John Wesley HELMS
who was estranged from my family when I was just a small boy in the
late 1930s. He was supposed to have had siblings including a half
brother in the Elmore Co. area. The last reported sighting of him was
in Prattville Ala. where it is believed that he died in the late
1960s. He was married to Josephine CULPEPPER and they produced twin
boys Lester Horace HELMS (my father) and Chester Forace HELMS both born
on sept 15 1904. They also had the following daughters Katherine, Ruby,
Jeanette and Pearl. I believe my Aunt Jeanette used to visit an uncle

be Jefferson Davis HELMS

family of Wetumpka, Elmore county. The Austins lived in Wetumpka in the early
1860s. For a short time around 1900, they were found living in Titus, Alabama in
Coosa country and then back to Elmore county. Myg-g-grandmother was Emiline
Austin. I do not know her husband's name. Emiline was born in Virginia
according to the 1880 U.S. census. She was 42 yrs. old at the time. She also
had live children in her household in 1880. Georgian, Martha and Sarah were the
daughters, ages 13 , 3, and 1 yrs. old respectively. Emiline's son, TURNER
AUSTIN, was my great-grandfather. He lived in Wetumpka most of his life. He
married Angeline Littles-Chancelor from the Wetumpka area. Angenline's parents
were Alfred Chancelor and Mandy Littles. According to family history, several of
Emiline's children were the product of a relationship with a Mr.
"SPRIGNER" (SPELLING ?) of the Wetumpka area. In fact, there is a
person by that name living next door to the Austin family in the U.S. Census.
Any information of these families would be helpful. Will also share information
in return. Thanks.

Need info on Thoms M. THORNTON.
Allegedly, Thomas M. THORNTON was from Coosa and Elmore. His father was
possibly John Walter THORNTON who died in civil war, Spottsylvania. Possible
John Welden assisted in help rase the children.
Big question under 1860 census: J.J. THORNTON in Coosa Co. has child born
April 1860 Horatio M. THORNTON. Is Thomas M. Thornton the same person?
Thomas M. died in 1901, possibly Elmore Co. His child Race M. THORNTON is
actually Haratio M. THORNTON. Race (Horatio) was my grandfather.
Race's son was Ratio THORNTON, my uncle. You can see the variations of the
name in each generation.
Problem is conflicting data from family members. Written census has not yet
determined that Thomas M. THORNTON is Horatio M. THORNTON. Can not locate
John Welden in census yet to see if children are the same.

Sun Aug 30 20:58:05 1998 Home page: I
have recently recieved news, my BATCHELOR family were located in Elmore co, AL
during the early 1800. There is a book, I have found, which tells of this family
having a hotel. on page 68 in the Book History of Coosa County which
was written in 1918 I find the following quote, "In 1836 hotels and boarding
houses were in good supply and demand in Wetumpka because of the large amount
of travel and River traffic on the Coosa River. Besides a Mr. HORTON and Mr.
GALLAGHER, there were at different times and places catering to the public the
ECHOLS, Mr. BATCHELOR, BLAKES, the SAXON's, POGUE, ROACH, Mrs. PHILLIPS and a
Mrs. ROBERTS. The leading hotel after GALLAGHER's in Wetumpka was called the
"Coosa Hall," until it's destrution by fire, then later it was called
Riverside. The hotels and boarding houses described by Mr. Brewer in his book History of Coosa County, were located in Wetumpka, which
was a part of Coosa County during those early times as Elmore County had not been founded yet. Also, the Community of Buyckville and Antioch Church which I am very familiar and have went to the Church many times myself and where the Book says my BATCHELORs lived is now in the Northern part of Elmore County. Anyone having information to help me, would be a Godsend!! I have been hitting my head against a brick wall for a long time now. Names may be spelled, BATCHELOR, BACHELOR, BATCHELDER

Could you all search ELMORE County and tell me if there are any pre-1950 theater
buildings still standing. The name, former names, date built, architect if
known, the number of seats and the present use and condition is the information
that I am looking for. When the list is finished it will be displayed by state at

Bertha 'Bertie, and Willie Bell (don't know the third daughter's name). I have
been trying for 30 years to find out what happened to William and his family.
Recently received a letter written by James Andrew Pylant's widow, Alma G., back
in the late 1960s. She lived in Montgomery, AL at the time but passed away in
1972 according to the Social Security Death Index. In the letter she states:
"My husband was James Andrew Pylant, born Feb. 29, 1892, now deceased as is
his brother and sisters. I gues he was born in Mt. Creek, Alabama as he said
when he was two years old his mother and children left there and went to
Meridian, Mississippi, as her brother's wife had died, so she took her five and
went to keep house for him and his five. Remember not too long after my
marriage, my husband received a telegram from a Mrs. Nellie Pylant saying his
father had been killed crossing a railroad track (in horse and buggy)."
William M. Pylant was enumerated with his sister's family in Milam Co, TX in the
1900 census - I think he was just visiting at the time. I get the impression
that William and his wife, Frances, were separated or divorced at this time. Any
information anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.
