ADAH stands for the Alabama Department of Archives and History. ADAH is linked to the Civil War Service Database, which is a treasure trove for Alabama Civil War researchers. For more information about this database, click here

Some Civil War veterans eventually lived the last part of their lives in the Mountain Creek Soldiers Home in Chilton County, Alabama. A list of some of its residents from 1901 to October 1933 can be found by clicking here.  

Confederate Memorial Park is located in Southeast Chilton County and is administered by the Alabama Historical Commission. Confederate Memorial Park was the site of Alabama's only Confederate veterans home (Mountain Creek Soldiers Home). The facility was in operation from 1902 to 1939 for the care of elderly veterans and their wives and widows. Of the many hundreds who resided at the facility, 313 were buried in one of the two cemeteries located at this site. Cemetery #1 is the original cemetery, and was used from 1902 to 1911, when Cemetery #2 was opened.

WEST, John Hamilton (4^th Corporal, New Company I, 5^th Alabama Infantry Regiment)  John Hamilton West, Jr. born September 1831 in St Clair Country, Alabama and died April 30, 1903 in Lower Peach Tree, Wilcox County, Alabama and buried Independence Cemetery, Wilcox County, Alabama the son of Elizabeth M. Horton, (b. in North Carolina) and John H. West, Sr. (b abt 1792 in North Carolina – d. before 1840 in St Clair County Alabama). J. H. West Jr. married December 25, 1857 in Clarke County, Alabama to Julia Mae Champion (b. October 1837 in Wilcox County, Alabama – d. July 6, 1900 and buried with J H West at Independence Cemetery, Wilcox County, Alabama) the daughter of John James Champion (Private, Company “A” 23^rd Alabama Infantry Regiment) (b. 1819 in South Carolina – d. May 17, 1892). J. H. Jr. enlisted in Company “A” 5^th Alabama Infantry Regiment at Grove Hill, Alabama, on March 16, 1862, by Captain J. M. Hall. He was captured at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on May 3, 1863, and forwarded to Washington, D. C., the following day, where he was paroled on May 10, 1863 and was sent to City Point, Virginia, for exchange along with 894 other Confederate prisoners. He was wounded on May 5, 1864, at Spottsylvania Courthouse. He appears on a morning report of Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, on May 18, 1863, with a minnie ball wound in the right leg. He was admitted to General Hospital, Howard ?s Grove, Richmond, Virginia, on July 5, 1864, and was furloughed July 22, 1864. His signature appears on his final pay receipt. Son of Michael B. & Parthenia Davis Whatley.  Husband of Martha C. Adams Whatley.  Their children were Rhoda, Michael, Joseph, Henry, Martha, John L., Annie D., Ella, & Allie Mae.  John H. enlisted at Abbeville, Ala. on July 27, 1861, as Private, Company G, 15th Alabama Regiment and continued until wounded and disabled at Cold Harbor, Virginia., on June 27, 1862.  His Confederate marker has been placed on a neighboring grave, making it appear that two John H. Whitley’s are buried here.  Dolly Sowell may be buried in the grave with the Confederate marker.]
WHIDDON, Lott  (Corporal, Company K, 61^st Alabama Infantry Regiment) Lott born about 1839 in Henry County the son of Dempsey Whiddon and Susan Barnes Whiddon and died May 10, 1864. He married January 6, 1859 in Henry County, Alabama to Nancy Kirkland. He enlisted as a Private on April 17, 1862 at Franklin, Henry County Alabama with Irwin’s Invincibles/Henry Light Infantry. Transferred May 2, 1862 to 2^nd Company I, 38^th Georgia Infantry Regiment; Transferred March 1, 1863 to 2^nd Company A, 60^th Georgia Infantry Regiment; Transferred April 11, 1864 to Company K, 61st Alabama Infantry Regiment. WHITE, John G. (2^nd Lieutenant, Company G, 11^th Alabama Infantry Regiment) John was born 1825 in Georgia - died of pneumonia at Centreville Virginia on December 25, 1861. He married December 24, 1844 in Tallapoosa Alabama to Martha A Crow (b. 1828). They had the following children. 1) Sarah Jane White born June 8, 1847, married July 7, 1872 to Joseph B. Wamfeld (sp); 2) Julia Ann White born August 1849 - Died November 1865; 3) Martha Ann Permicia White Born July 1851 married September 22, 1875 to (entry smeared); 4) Nancy Catherine White born January 1854; 5) John Green White Born December 22, 1855; 6) Lucinda Frances White Born February 1858 - died April 1859; 7) Mary Ann White born February 1860. I received this from another researcher a couple of years ago. He sent me a copy of a page from Captain McMath's handwritten diary that had Lt. John G. White Dying on December 25, 1861.  He also said that John was buried near the Lewis house which is at the Manassas Battlefield park.  He said the graves were probably moved later on.  I was just wondering if there was any information on this. (Sergeant, Company “D” 39th Alabama Infantry Regiment) John Wesley Whitehurst alternately listed as Wesley was born in December 11, 1839 at Hilliardsville and died September 20, 1918 and buried at Cowarts Baptist Church Cemetery, Houston County Alabama; the son of Honey A. and Stephen A. Whitehurst. John married Nancy Farmer also buried at Cowarts Baptist Church Cemetery, Houston County Alabama. He enlisted May 1, 1862 at Opelika Alabama as a Private. WHITTAKER, E. B. (Corporal, Company A, 1^st Battalion Alabama Artillery) Died February 19, 1865 at Elmira Military Prison, Elmira New York. Buried in Plot Number 2344 at Woodlawn National Cemetery.
WILKINSON (WILKERSON) Archie (Private, 12^th Alabama Infantry Regiment) Service Records show that he enlisted June 12, 1861 at Tuskegee Alabama. Was wounded September 26, 1862, was furloughed for 31 days. During this time he was thought to be missing or AWOL. There was a letter from S. B. Pickens stating that he was just on furlough. He was captured September 19, 1864 by Sheridan's forces at Harper's Ferry Virginia and arrived on September 24, 1864 at Point Lookout Maryland. He was paroled at Point Lookout Maryland and transferred to Aikens Landing Virginia on March 15, 1865 for exchange. Source:  Raye Wilkerson Jones
WILLCUTT, Andrew John (Private Willcutt, Company B, 1^st Mississippi Mounted Rifles, United States Army) The son of William and Nancy Hisaw Willcutt and grandson of Lewis and Rachel Willcutt. He joined Company B, 1st Mississippi Mounted Rifles, United States Army on February 27, 1864. His description was age 18; born in Fayette County, Alabama; a farmer; eyes blue; hair auburn; complexion fair; height 5 ft. 6 in. According to his pension file, his chest was crushed when he ran against a tree while charging Confederates near Memphis, Tennessee. He mustered out 26 June 1865 as John Willcut. WILLCUTT, Elijah (Private Company C, 1^st Missouri Infantry Regiment) A son of Lewis and Rachel Willcutt. According to his pension application, he joined in April 1864 as the First Missouri Infantry Regiment passed through Windham Springs, Alabama. Source:  Amelia Willcutt
WILLCUTT, James (Private Company K, 43^rd Alabama Infantry Regiment) son of Lewis and Rachel Willcutt. He enlisted as a private in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on 14 May 1862 for a period of three years or the war. A muster roll taken in December 1862 said James had been sick at Atlanta, Ga. since Aug. 28, 1862. A muster roll for the Post Hospital at Dalton, Georgia recorded James as a nurse at the hospital. On 1 November 1862, he was admitted to the hospital for febris remittens (recurrent fever.) He returned to duty early in December 1862. Source:  Amelia Willcutt
WILLCUTT, Robert (Private Company I, 32^nd Alabama Infantry Regiment) A son of Lewis and Rachel Willcutt, Robert Willcut. Enlisted April 21, 1862 in Fayette, Alabama for the period of three years or the duration of the war. Robert Willcutt died in Mobile just over two months after enlisting. He was buried in the Confederate Rest section of Mobile’s Magnolia Cemetery. Source:  Amelia Willcutt

WILLIAMS, Andrew Jackson (Corporal Company G, 31st Alabama Infantry Regiment) Enlisted April 3, 1862 at Talladega by Captain Chapman; at Camp Goldthwaite May 7, 1862; was a Private and wardmaster at Wilson Hospital, Atlanta from June 14, 1862 through August 1862. His records stop after that. Andrew was born August 2, 1833, died Mar 28, 1897, buried Bethany Christian Church Cemetery, Paulding County, Georgia. He married Edna A. Reeves on April 17, 1864 in Carroll County, Georgia. They were the parents of at least 5 children: John N. Grant Williams, Martha A. R. Williams, Elijah Thomas Williams, Mary A. Williams, and Amos H. Williams.

October 3, 1880 in Daviston, Tallapoosa County, Alabama and buried at Spring Church Cemetery, Daviston, Tallapoosa County, Alabama.. Baron is the son of William Wesley Williams (b September 18, 1810 in Georgia – d aft 1880 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama) and Minerva Fannin (b February 1812 in Georgia – d. Tallapoosa County, Alabama) Enlisted April 26, 1861 at Unions Springs, Alabama by R. H. Powell; wounded June 27, 1862 at Mechanicsville; lost his right arm in action May 8, 1864 at the Battle of Spottsylvania. He married Louisiana Antinette Motley (b. December 28, 1845 in Daviston, Tallapoosa County, Alabama – d. March 21, 1922 in Daviston, Tallapoosa County, Alabama and buried at Spring Church Cemetery, Daviston, Tallapoosa County, Alabama.) the daughter of Coleman Pendleton Motley and Hester Ann Perkins.  Baron and Louisiana Williams Children: 1) Hester Ann Minerva Williams (m. Tallapoosa County, Alabama) Married July 21, 1858 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama to Henrietta Adeline Floyd the daughter of Goodwin D. Floyd (b 1799 in North Carolina) and Sarah. William and Henrietta moved to Texas after the war and are buried at LaFayette Cemetery, Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas. Children: 1) William Goodwin Williams b. in Tallapoosa County, Alabama; 2) Andrew H. Williams b. in Tallapoosa County, Alabama; 3) Henrietta Varena Williams b. in Tallapoosa County, Alabama; 4) Luna Lindsey Williams b. in Tallapoosa County, Alabama; 5) Anna M. WILLIAMSON, James (1^st Lieutenant, Company F, 10^th Alabama Infantry Regiment)
WILLIAMSON, William Thomas (Private Company F, 10^th Alabama Infantry Regiment) William was born December 13, 1843 in St. Clair County, Alabama the son of Anna McFee of South Carolina and David Williamson born in South Carolina. Siblings were Elizabeth Williamson, Josephine Williamson and Mile Ann Williamson . He married there on November 20, 1861 to Dallas Lee. He was 17 and she was 15. He enlisted within 3 months under Captain James D. Truss. He was captured at Gettysburg after being wounded in his right hand and right eye.  His pension application states he was wounded because a shell burst in battle.  He was imprisoned at Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island, Delaware until 1866.  Children Dallas and William are: 1) John Owen Williamson, 2) Bob Williamson , 3) Effie Williamson , 4) Emma Williamson , 5) Mack Williamson and 6) Dave Williamson. William and his wife Dallas attempted on several occasions to enter the Old Confederate Soldiers Home in Arkansas, but William Williamson died in 1924 without ever having been given a home.  He died destitute.   He and his wife are buried in the old section of the DeAnn Cemetery in Prescott Nevada County, Arkansas. WOODHAM, J. R. (Private Company G & H, 15^th Alabama Infantry Regiment) James R. Woodham tombstone states born 1823; died at 81 years. His grave is marked Canty's Company, 15th Alabama that is in error; states b. 1823, which I feel is in error also; d. at age 81 which is most likely correct; from my figuring this James, brother of Samuel who had a big fist-fight down in Newton Dale County Alabama following the war due to James' alliance during the war; any rate, buried in Old Ferrill Cemetery, Jackson County, Mississippi.  Note James Canty was a Colonel and Regimental Command and later prompted to Brigadier General.
