ADAH stands for the Alabama Department of Archives and History. ADAH is linked to the Civil War Service Database, which is a treasure trove for Alabama Civil War researchers. For more information about this database, click here
CWSS stands for the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, which is the National Parks Service's database with 6.3 million names of those who served in the Civil War, both Union and Confederate. For more information on this database, click here.
Some Civil War veterans eventually lived the last part of their lives in the Mountain Creek Soldiers Home in Chilton County, Alabama. A list of some of its residents from 1901 to October 1933 can be found by clicking here.
Confederate Memorial Park is located in Southeast Chilton County and is administered by the Alabama Historical Commission. Confederate Memorial Park was the site of Alabama's only Confederate veterans home (Mountain Creek Soldiers Home). The facility was in operation from 1902 to 1939 for the care of elderly veterans and their wives and widows. Of the many hundreds who resided at the facility, 313 were buried in one of the two cemeteries located at this site. Cemetery #1 is the original cemetery, and was used from 1902 to 1911, when Cemetery #2 was opened.

PACE, Burrell Verner (Private, Newmans Alabama Cavalry) Burrell was born 1818 in Rutherford County North Carolina; died January 28, 1865 at Camp Douglas Illinois and is buried in the Confederate Mound at the cemetery there. He was the son of Jonathan PACE, (b 1779 d. 1870 in Henderson County North Carolina) and Susannah ALLEN (b 1799). He married Hannah HARDING, (b April 15, 1823 in Greenville, South Carolina and died June 14, 1912 in Hendrixville DeKalb County Alabama) They moved to DeKalb County sometime in the late 1840's it appears along with two of Hannah's siblings. They bought land, and this is recorded in land records-- on a ridge and the address is at various times Hendrixville, Chumley, Marcus, DeKalb County, Alabama. I have a copy of Hannah's application for her Widow's pension. Children of Burrell Pace and Hannah Hardin(g) are (1) Isabella Pace b: August 19, 1845 in South Carolina d: February 27, 1920 in Saltillo, Texas; married Benjamin Franklin Patrick b: March 10, 1846 in DeKalb County, Alabama - d: December 11, 1902 in Saltillo, Texas. (2) Nancy Telitha Pace b: June 1847 in DeKalb County, Alabama; married 1st to J. W. Evett d: Before 1885; married 2nd to Jasper M. Waldrop b: June 24, 1839 d. March 1901. (3) Dock C. Pace b: June 1850 in DeKalb County, Alabama; married Cintha C. b: January 1851 in DeKalb County, Alabama. (4) Malinda Pace b: 1851 in DeKalb County, Alabama d: Before 1892; married Henry Stevens. (5) Evaline Pace b: 1855 in DeKalb County, Alabama d: September 1939; married Ira M Doyal - b: 1855 d: 1945. (6) Cobb Pace b: 1857 in DeKalb County, Alabama d. Before 1892. (7) Margaret Pace b: February 10, 1861 in DeKalb County, Alabama d: November 11, 1920 in DeKalb County, Alabama; married Cicero Lafayette Doyal b: June 20, 1856 in Alabama d. November 17, 1924 in DeKalb County, Alabama. Burrell served with Captain Wiley Newman's Volunteer Home Guard Cavalry (all these designations are found at one place or another on his widow's pension application). I have found little about this group or about Wiley Newman, although we later marry into the Newman family. A look up found two other men who listed this as their group. Beginning date of service is unknown but according to a letter written by his daughter, he was captured in November 1864. He was transported to Camp Douglas, Illinois where he died January 28, 1865, and since his first name was misspelled on the Roster, I assume it is misspelled on the plates that are mounted on the Monument there. I descend through the youngest daughter, Margaret, who remembered the day she saw her father leave , never to return. Margaret married Cicero Doyal and her sister Evaline married his brother Ira Doyal. Source: Jeanne Park
