Special Notes on Alabama Civil War Units
- 1st Confederate Cavalry Regiment: Two companies from northwest corner of Alabama
- 23rd Alabama Infantry Battalion... see Hilliard's Legion.
- 26th - 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment... Due to an administrative oversight, two units were initially designated as being the 26th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. One of these was serving in Virginia; the other as part of the Army of Tennessee. When the error was discovered, the unit serving in Tennessee was re-designated the 26-50th Regiment, which it was known as for the remainder of the war. From July 1864 onward, both regiments were assigned to the Army of Tennessee. Therefore, the genealogical researcher must exercise caution to not get the two units confused. **** Many errors of this type, concerning this regiment, are known to exist in the National Archives, Compiled Service Records.
- 27th Alabama Infantry Regiment... This regiment was captured at Ft. Donelson, Tennessee, in early 1862, except for some men that were sick in hospital. These men were organized into two companies, and attached to the 33rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment, and fought with that unit at Perryville, Kentucky. These two companies were rejoined to their Alabama regiment, after the 27th was exchanged in late 1862.
- 54th Alabama Infantry Regiment... This regiment was composed of the six Alabama companies that were part of the 1st Alabama-MS-TN regiment, commanded by Colonel Baker of Barbour County; and the Alabama companies from the Tennessee Regiment commanded by Colonel L. M. Walker. Both of these regiments had been captured at Island Number Ten, after a year's service above Memphis. After being exchanged, the Alabama companies were assembled at Jackson, Mississippi, in October 1862, and formed into the 54th Alabama Infantry Regiment.
- 55th Alabama Infantry Regiment... This regiment was composed of Snodgrass's and Norwood's old battalions. The unit commanded by Snodgrass was organized in the Spring of 1862, with men who had already served a year in units from other states. The Norwood battalion was composed of men who had been captured at Ft. Donelson, while part of Quarles' Tennessee regiment. These two battalions were assembled and formed into the 55th Alabama Infantry Regiment, at Port Hudson, Louisiana, in February 1863.
- 56th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Mounted... This regiment, also known as the 56th Alabama Cavalry Regiment (Partisan), was organized in the Summer of 1863. It included one detached company of men from northeastern Mississippi.
- 59th Alabama Infantry Regiment... see Hilliard's Legion.
- 60th Alabama Infantry Regiment... see Hilliard's legion.
- Waddell's Alabama Battery... This unit was organized in February 1862, by an order allowing twenty men to be taken from each company of the 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment. The battery was captured at Vicksburg, in July 1863. After being exchanged, the men were used to form two new Alabama batteries; Emery's and Bellamy's.
- Water's Alabama Battery... This unit was over-run at Missionary Ridge in late 1863, and half the men captured. The remainder were distributed between Cobb's (Kentucky) and Mayberry's (Tennessee) Batteries, where they served until the end.
- Hilliard's Legion... organized at Montgomery, in June 1862, it was composed of five battalions (one cavalry and four infantry) and one battery of artillery. The identity of the battery is not yet known, but logically was one of those formed in Montgomery. In late 1862, the cavalry battalion, commanded by Colonel M. M. Slaughter of Talladega County, was consolidated with Goode's Georgia Cavalry Battalion, to become the 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment. In November 1863, the four infantry battalions were reassigned, and used to form the 59th and 60th Alabama Infantry Regiments, and the 23rd Alabama Infantry Battalion. At this time, Hilliard's Legion faded out of existence.
