Company "C" - Confederate Rifles [subsequently, Company "I"] (Wilcox & Marengo): George Lynch (until reorganization, April 27, 1862); Julius A. Kimbrough (KIA, 19 September 62); John B. Deloach (resigned, 11 January 64); James L. Fisher (resigned, 16 March 63)

Clifton, April 27, 1861

His Excellency A. B. Moore
Sir
Some two or three months since I had the honor of supporting to you a company organized under the name of the Marengo Rifles, and officered as follows George Lynch Capt.; Hamit J. Craig 1st Lt.; Dudley Mask 2nd Lt. and John Lynch 3 Lt., all of said officers were commissioned by your Excely., but the company not having a sufficient number to be received into service, you directed me to fill up our ranks to at least 76 men, and then report to you. I have according done so, and now have the pleasure of notifying you that we now have rank and file seventy-seven men, with the prospect of still further increasing our number. But since reporting the company we have found it necessary to change the name of this company from that of the Marengo Rifles to Confederate Rifles, this change was found necessary owing to the fact that the company was made up in about equal parts of Wilcox and Marengo counties. We have also found it necessary to make some change in the officers, George Lynch of Wilcox and Hamit J. Craig still hold their positions respectively of Capt. and 1st Lt. But John S. Lynch has been advanced from the position of third Lt. to that of 2nd and Dudley Mask who held the position of 2nd has been superceded by him, and Julius A. Kimbrough has been elected to the post of third Lt. under the above state of facts it may become necessary for you to issue new commissions, for all of the officers, if so I would like for my commission as well as that of the 1st Lt. to be dated back to the time of the first commissions.
We now hold ourselves subject to your order, and you will please give Mr. Thos. J. Rives the bearer of this such information as you may deem necessary in regard to our future movements.

 Very respectfully,
Your Excely. Obedient Sevt.,
George Lynch, Capt.
Confederate Rifles

Family stories are that he was shot in thigh on that day in battle and that the firing was so hot the woods caught on fire. The surgeons were going to pass him by because they felt he wasn't going to make it and he begged them to move him to a tree to lean against he told them he could make it and they told him they would come back and get him. before they got back the woods were on fire and burned him to death.
