PRINCE, Green (Corporal, Company D, 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment) Green Prince was born in Kentucky ca. 1842. He was the son of William D. Prince and Arty Mullins, and the grandson of John Prince Sr., a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Green is found with his brothers and sister in the 1850 census of Murray County Georgia. He was the brother of Ira H. Prince, Company “H” 34th Georgia Infantry Regiment, and William Prince, Company “D” 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Cousin to John H. Prince, Private, Company “D” 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Green is next found in the 1860 census of Madison county Alabama living in the household of Franklin Glenn and family. Green was 19 in this census and may have been a farm hand or family friend. I have yet to find Green's parents in an 1860 census. Living in the adjoining county of Jackson Ala. was Green's older brother, Ira H. Prince and family. Ira lived app. 3 miles from Dade county Ga. and one mile from Marion county Tenn. Pretty much the same area where John B. Gordon lived and worked. Ira Prince and John Gordon were the same age, both born in 1832. According to Green's CMSR file, his official muster into the 6th  Alabama was May 15, 1861 at Montgomery Alabama. Of course, John Gordon had formed this company “Raccoon Roughs” earlier from recruits in the of Dade County Georgia., Marion County Tennessee. and Jackson County Alabama. Green's medical info from his CMSR, has him at Winder Hospital in Richmond Virginia from August 29, 1862 until September 29, 1862. Returned to duty on September 30, 1862. Another report has him absent and sick since October 30, 1862 at the 2nd Alabama Hospital in Richmond. His date of death was December 2, 1862 from Philthis Pulmonalis. This is an archaic medical term for what we now call Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Most probably, Green is buried in Hollywood Cemetery. or Oakwood Cemetery. in Richmond. The Virginia. Historical Society has records of some of the Confederates buried at Hollywood, but he was not on the list. He may be in an unmarked grave, like so many others. PRINCE, John (Private, Company D, 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment) John (H) Prince was born 1829 in South Carolina to John Prince and Ellender (Vickers?) This family migrated from South Carolina to Warren County Tennessee, to Habersham County Georgia, and by 1850 were in Dade County Georgia. John Prince found in the 1860 census of Dade county Georgia, which borders on Jackson County Alabama. His official enlistment date was May 15, 1861 in Montgomery Alabama for a period of 12 months.  John H. Prince appears on a Register of Payments to Discharged Soldiers. His date of discharge was November 7, 1861, with a payment date of November 9, 1861 by J. B. Hill. His CMSR had his discharge papers enclosed which states he was enlisted by Captain Gordon at Chilmont, Alabama on April 3, 1861 to serve one year. And is now entitled to discharge by reason of Surgeon Certification of Disability. His payment was $81.82 less $37.00 for clothing overdrawn, for a total payment of $44.82 The discharge paper looks to be signed by John Gordon, Capt. Company D. According to my research over the last 5 years, I surmise that this John Prince of Co D, was a cousin of brothers William and Green Prince of this company. I believe, with no documented proof, that their fathers were brothers.  I have not researched John Prince past his date of release from the 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment. I will keep you updated on these Prince men as I find more data.Source: Ira Phil Prince [email protected]

PRINCE, William (Corporal, Company D, 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment) William Prince was born ca. 1843 in Kentucky, and was the younger brother of Green Prince and cousin of John Prince of this Company. His official enlistment date was May 15, 1861 at Montgomery Ala, and was recruited at Long Island Jackson County Alabama. William's brother Ira H. Prince was living in the community of Long Island in the 1860 census. Of course, William was in the 1850 census of Murray county Georgia. with his parents and  siblings. I have not found William in an 1860 census as of yet. William had various receipt rolls for clothing issued in his CMSR during the years of 1862 and 1863. William appears on a register of Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond on April 22, 1862 and back at Camp Windsor on the 8th of May. He appears on a Register of Receiving and Wayside Hospital or General Hospital # 9 in Richmond on May 7, 1863. Neither of the two hospital reports listed why he was admitted. Then, on another document, it has the following: Deserted and went to the enemy while on furlough January 1864. It may be that he deserted, but I wonder how his superiors would really know that. Could it be that William was actually captured? I have lost track of him after this date, and am still researching to find out what happened to him. Source: Ira Phil Prince [email protected]

John Webb was born July 31, 1831 the son of Wiley Webb and brother to Martin Van Buren Webb of this company. He married Emaline Parker, daughter of Hiram Parker. Their first child, William, is listed in the 1860 Marion County Census, at age one year. After the War, the 1870 Census lists John and Emaline Webb residing in the Shellmound Community of Marion County with children William B. Webb, Wiley Webb, John J. Webb, Robert E. Webb, and Martha L. Webb. Another daughter, Nancy Webb called "Nannie," was born in 1871. She married John S. Massengale, son of James Massengale.  http://earth.vol.com/~guy/  ggGrandson, Guy Millard  [email protected]; ggGrandson, Jerry Blevins, Huntsville, Alabama -  [email protected]

John Webb's Compiled Service Record indicates for some unknown reason, John Webb did not muster in until the Regiment was already at Manassas, Virginia, in August 1861. He was in the hospital at Petersburg, Virginia, in April 1863. He drew clothing issues, in August 1863 and November 1864. Private John Webb was with General Gordon at the Bloody Lane and all the major actions that the 6th fought in. He was captured at Petersburg, in April 2, 1865 during rear guard action in the Confederate Army's withdrawal from Petersburg Virginia, and sent to Point Lookout. He was released in June 1865, with a note on this record: "Transportation furnished to Chattanooga, Tennessee." His parole papers at Point Lookout also provide the following vital statistics: Complexion: Fair; Hair: Auburn; Eyes: Blue; Height: 5 feet 7 1/2 inches. "Sequatchie Valley Soldiers in the Civil War" by Jerry Blevins, Huntsville, Alabama - [email protected]

That he was honorably discharged, paroled, or released from such service and did not desert the same. She says . He was in the fight at Gettysburg. The Pension also stated that Thomas died October 1900 in Crow Scott County Arkansas. Other information indicates the date should be 1899. YERGAN, Andrew J. (Private, Company D 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment)

On Feb. 5, 2003, James D. Allen, creator of this website passed away
There is no doubt that he would want the work on the
6th Alabama Infantry to go on.
With that in mind, this site is dedicated to him.
We miss you, Jimmy.
